10 Inexpensive Sushi Places That Will Make You Squeal “OISHI!”

15th October 2015

Sushi for the Munchy

A wise man once told me that you can’t buy happiness, but you can buy sushi (they’re kind of the same thing). Once you’ve locked lips with these mouth-gasmic enchantresses, there’s no turning back. Whether you’re crazy for thick slabs of sashimi that melt on your tongue or simply some sweetened tamago, these 10 amazing sushi places will cast a spell on your taste buds.

1. Kinsa Sushi

Good sushi often comes with a crippling price tag. Luckily at Kinsa Sushi, it ain’t about the cha-ching cha-ching or the b-bling b-bling, but quality sushi at affordable prices. It’s apparent that these people are truly passionate about their seafood, taking in shipments 3 to 4 times a week.

Plus, you get to experience Singapore’s first levitating sushi belt. I mean, floating sushi? It can’t get better than that. Be sure to pick up their Salmon Belly ($5.80) and Scallop ($4.80) Sushi, simple seafood on rice pairings that are surprisingly jam-packed with flavours.

Opening hours: Daily: 11.30am – 10pm
Address: 4 Hillview Rise, HillV2 #02-02, 669320

2. Genki Sushi

If you’re looking for a unique dining experience, Genki Sushi is the one for you. Their double decker ‘Kousoku’ Express conveyor belt serves sushi straight to your table on a Shinkansen (train).

Fret not, this quirky delivery system is not just a packaging gimmick, their sushi quality is just as promising. Look out for their impressive Nigiri sushi collection, with Smoked Duck ($2.30) and Anago (Sea Eel) ($3.80) sushi that will melt your heart with their luscious textures and bursts of flavour.

Opening hours: Daily: 11.30am – 10pm
Address: 181 Orchard Rd, 238896

3. Ryoshi Sushi – Ikeikemaru

One thing I really look out for when it comes to seafood sushi is translucent flesh and a shiny finish. The sushi at IkeIkemaru hits the nail on the head, with an absolutely flawless finish that even dermatologists would approve of. Their Gunkan Set ($6.80) comes with 8 Nigiri sushis of different flavours, some of which will have you begging for more with their irresistibly succulent flesh.

What really puts me off is when my sushi comes with a thin strip of salmon that barely tastes like anything over the vinegared rice. The Big Salmon Sushi ($2.80) at IkeIkemaru is the role model for sushi places, with salmon as thick and satisfying as Cara Delevingne’s eyebrows.

Opening hours: Daily: 11.30am – 10pm
Address: 111 Somerset Road #02-11/12 Triple One Somerset Singapore 238164

4. Fukuichi

I can’t help but play chubby bunny at Fukuichi, stuffing my cheeks with rows of maki goodness like a famished squirrel. The seafood at Fukuichi is a clear winner, with so much fatty marbling around refreshing meat that prove to be better than that of a 5 star hotel buffet. Their Spider Maki Roll ($15) is a crowd favourite, with soft-shell crab that’s deep fried to the perfect tenderness. Otherwise, the Ikura (salmon roe) Sushi ($16) will pop in your mouth like firecrackers with a fishy goodness that’s fresher than the prince of Bel Air.

Opening hours: Daily: 11.30am – 9.30pm
Address: 177 River Valley Road, Basement 1, Liang Court, 179030

5. The Sushi Bar

You wouldn’t expect to find one of the best sushi restaurants in Singapore at a place like Far East Plaza. The Sushi Bar has broken the stereotype, with long lines of hungry people dying to grab a bite of their delectable sushi. Their Salmon Aburi Rolls ($14.90) will take your breath away, literally. The strong flavours of the aburi salmon will fill your mouth with the lasting aroma of a grill. Take your gastronomic experience one step higher with a Soft Shell Crab Salmon Aburi ($16.90), a slight variation on the classic Salmon Aburi that tastes like a completely different dish when frolicking in your mouth.

Opening hours: Mon – Fri: 12.30pm – 3pm / 5.30pm– 9pm, Sat: 12.30pm – 9pm
Address: #04-28, Far East Plaza, 14 Scotts Road, 228213

6. Tomi Sushi

When it’s hot outside, you won’t be craving spicy mee poh or bak kut teh, but an icy plate of sushi to cool down your body. Tomi Sushi serves some of the most refreshing sushis in Singapore. Their seafood is fresh and clean on your tongue and slides down your throat in like molten gold. The fatty marbling on their raw fish is as good as that of Wagyu beef, revealing its layers as you chew. Make sure you try their Hotate (scallop) Sushi ($8) and Tai Sushi ($12), made with their freshly selected ingredients, a fresh texture and unbelievable taste you won’t regret paying for.

Opening hours: Daily: 11.30am – 9.30pm
Address: 238 Thomson Road, #02-11 Novena Square, 307683

7. Itacho Sushi

Has it ever occurred to you that when it comes to dinner time, your sushi might have been sitting on the countertop for an entire day? Well, there’s a simple solution to this problem. Itacho prepares their dishes upon order, so you can vouch for the freshness of their ingredients. The best way to enjoy your experience at Itacho is to opt for An Assortment of Chef’s Daily Sushi for only $16.50! This wonderfully affordable spread comes with seven pieces of sushi and one cut roll. Plus, it’s served with a quality soup and salad, talk about value added!

8. Sushi Goshin by Akashi

Sushi Goshin looks like a place you’d pay a hundred dollars for, but do not be deceived by its charming decor, their prices are surprisingly affordable. The restaurant is passionate about making their sushi as authentic as possible, a true blue Japanese experience. Their basic Salmon sushi will only cost you $1.50, a price way below its worth. If you’re a little more daring, opt for their Creamy Swordfish sushi ($2), a rich flavour that will coat your tongue in the glossy magic of the sea.

9. Koh Sushi Bar & Grill

Koh Sushi Bar & Grill is commonly known for their Shiok Maki ($16.80). The concept is to serve honest Japanese food at generous prices. These super shiok sushis come with a heaping amount of toppings, a super satisfying sushi experience indeed! Plus, their seafood is of exquisite quality, with layers of glossy meat and fishy fats that will tingle your tastebuds with every bite!

Opening hours: Daily: 11.30am – 10.30pm
Address: 435 Orchard Road, #04-21 Wisma Atria Shopping Centre, 238877

10. Chikuwa Tei

What I really love about this place is their absolutely scrumptious makis. The daring flavour combinations in their Makimoro menu never fail to wow the crowd. Check out their Tuna Belly and Spring Onion maki ($12), an interesting mix that works surprisingly well with the nori and vinegared rice. Or you could go back to basics with a luxurious Avocado and Crab maki ($8), a classic combination with tons of flavour. The biggest plus point of these makis is that the freshness of the seafood comes through the layers of nori and rice.

Opening hours: Daily: 11.30am – 3pm / 6pm – 10pm
Address: 9 Mohamed Sultan Rd, 238959
