It’s always a joy to people in the neighbourhood when little cafes pop up in the estate. Bloom Artisan popped up deep in the estate of Yishun and surprised many with its Brown Butter Sourdough Waffle ($4) and handmade gelato flavours on rotation. With the Circuit Breaker came the rise of many home-based businesses, some so successful that they managed to open physical cafes. Guilt is one of them, delivering thick and chonky IG-worthy cookies that rival Nasty Cookie’s. You won’t go wrong ordering their signature Walk of Shame ($4.50), which is an indulgent mix of dark chocolate chunks and gooey marshmallow.

Accessibly located at Capitol Piazza, Carmen’s Best is a popular Filipino ice cream shop that’s known for its lusciously dense ice cream that is free from additives and water. Single scoops are priced at $4.90 each. We recommend trying He’s Not Worth It and Brown Butter Almond Brittle for chocolate and nut lovers respectively.

If you’re looking for a beautiful and cosy spot to catch up with a friend or two, STEEPED Tea Bar at Bugis is worth the visit. Find great-tasting teas including their Pear High Mountain Oolong ($6.30) and Soursop Sencha ($6.60), which are made from quality ingredients. LUNA is a dessert cafe at Amoy Street selling trendy cakes such as their Orh Nee ($8) and Hazelnut Caramel ($8.50). The former is a surprisingly light one which has layers of fluffy vanilla sponge and chunky mashed yam in between. The latter is a total opposite with its dense and bittersweet chocolatey layers and Valrhona Guanaja 55% chocolate ganache.

Located at the NEWest mall, Simple Cafe offers Taiwanese cafe vibes with delicate, minimalistic cakes that are made for the ‘gram. We especially enjoyed their Hazel ($8.50), a rich chocolate cake with hazelnut praline, and the Mont Blanc ($9), a spin on the Japanese tart with berry compote in the middle, complementing the chestnut.

Dolc Patisserie got so Instagram-famous that our writer made a beeline for it weeks after it opened. The reason why it caught all the attention was because of its intricately designed tarts. On top of being good lookers, the tarts also boasted unique flavours such as strawberry and basil accompanied by rich mascarpone cheese. Must-tries include Charlotte ($8.50+) and Passionfruit Meringue Tart ($7.50+).

Mel Pot is great for those hankering for a trip to Japan for a taste of their rich and milky desserts. Located at Orchard Central, the kiosk in Hokkaido Marche has a plethora of unique sweet treats ranging from drinks like Matcha Lovers ($7.80), which features chewy warabimochi, to medium-sized cakes like the Half ripe Castella Cake ($18).
