Westies looking for an affordable matcha fix: this home-based business needs to be on your radar. Tucked away in a Bukit Batok HDB flat, Brewed by Davine is run by 20-year-old Davine, who serves freshly made matcha drinks straight from her HDB window, with occasional help from her little sister.
With matcha averaging around $7 a cup in Singapore, Davine’s $4.50 Matcha Peng is a steal. She keeps prices low using the oldest trick in the book: old-school kopi peng plastic bags. While most hawkers are transitioning to plastic cups, Brewed by Davine unintentionally keeps the tradition alive, making her matcha affordable and nostalgic.
The localised matcha is under the Peng series. Specifically, the Matcha Peng ($4.50), Milo Sea Salt Peng ($5), and Atas Teh Peng ($5), which is matcha flavoured with Earl Grey and vanilla. There’s also a Salty Gula Melaka Kopi Peng ($6), but that is served in a cup.Â
If you prefer, you can opt for all your drinks to be served in a cup for an extra $0.50.Â
We were lucky enough to watch her make it from scratch—she started by whisking the matcha powder with some water.Â
She then filled a bag with milk and poured in the matcha.Â
The classic Matcha Peng was milky and smooth, with earthy green tea notes that came through nicely. It also had just the right amount of sweetness, making for a well-balanced drink.
The Milo Sea Salt Peng was also milky, but it was a little sweeter and creamier due to the foam. The sea salt was a great addition, cutting through the richness so it didn’t get too jelak.Â
Davine also recommended her Sibei Chio ($6.50), which is matcha layered with butterfly pea flower milk and homemade strawberry puree. Sibei Chio is one of her best-sellers. Similar to the rest, this drink was very creamy; however, the puree added a nice strawberry flavour and chunkiness from the fruit.Â
Her desserts are also loved among regulars, with the  Biscoff Banana Shiok ($8) a crowd favourite.Â
The custard was thick and rich, with a distinct banana flavour. The Biscoff cookie’s cinnamon flavour complemented the banana and made for a great crunchy-on-creamy texture.
As F&B gets increasingly dominated by chain stores and corporations, make sure you also show some love to our local businesses! Don’t worry, the drinks will be well worth it.
