This New Cafe In Chinatown Has Durian “Pasta” And MSW Coffee

Durian Haus has durian pasta in Chinatown

Strange food combinations aren’t new to us. We’ve tried cockle ramen and milk tea at Takagi Ramen, shortly after we visited 8 Degrees for their wild pairing of bubble tea with ramen. But we’ve never seen anything close to durian pasta—until we came across Durian Haus, a cafe in Chinatown selling durian-themed drinks and desserts at nett prices.

We had to get the Papa Durian Spaghetti ($14.80/$16.80): chendol topped with durian puree shaped like spaghetti. FYI, the cheaper option comprises Musang King AKA Mao Shan Wang, while the pricier one uses the more premium Black Thorn instead.

My colleague and I were surprised by how fast the “durian pasta” disintegrated into a creamy, velvety-smooth puree upon our first scoop. If you’re wondering about the taste, it’s similar to pure durian flesh but slightly sweeter and more buttery.

As a coffee and durian lover, their Papa Musang King Durian White Coffee Ice ($7.20) was a must-try for me. The consistency was slightly thicker than a regular cup of kopi as it’s blended with durian, and there was a good yet slightly confusing mix of coffee and durian flavours. I couldn’t tell if it tasted more like the former or the latter; though it was a tad jelak to finish, there was something very addictive about it.

Durian Haus is relatively new, so please extend some grace if you face any teething issues. For easy access, the cafe is a quick four-minute walk from Chinatown MRT Station.
