In today’s economy, a decent meal that’s priced in the $3 range is difficult to come by, but recently, we found a hidden gem that challenges our statement above. Low Seng Kim at Geylang Bahru Market & Food Centre is a humble hawker stall that whips up wallet-friendly mee rebus and mee siam. What’s even more impressive is that shutters open as early as 1:30am every day except Monday, making for an ideal breakfast and supper spot to visit with your pals.

A bowl of their Nyonya Mee Siam ($3.50) comprises stir-fried vermicelli drenched in a delicious sweet and sour gravy. The noodles are topped with beansprouts, cubes of tau kwa, a hard-boiled egg, and a dollop of sambal chilli. What makes a Nyonya mee siam unique is the addition of coconut milk, which lends a rich creaminess to the gravy.

If you prefer something more robust, a comforting bowl of their Mee Rebus ($3.50) does the trick. Thick and viscous, the gravy used here is said to be of the right consistency. You also get sliced green chilli atop for more punch, so don’t be shy to ask for more if spicy food is your thing.

As you place your orders, you’ll notice small jars of pork floss and pieces of handmade bak hwa sold in plastic bags. FYI, these are available for sale!
