As we craft these listicles monthly, we realise how fast the year has passed. Yet, the influx of new restaurants is never slowing down. This September 2019, we see 11 new restaurants to busy ourselves with over the weekends, including Japan’s largest conveyor belt sushi chain and fluffy French-style souffle dishes.
Conveyor belt sushi joints are the best, as you get to watch plate after plate of sushi travel pass you, which helps stir up your appetite. Sushiro is Japan’s largest conveyor belt restaurant, and has over 100 dishes on the menu in their first-ever Southeast Asian outpost at Tiong Bahru Plaza.
Prices start at $2.20++ per plate, and you get unique creations such as Salmon with Basil Cheese, alongside classics like Tuna and Salmon. Aside from sushi, they also have a wide range of hot food, including Ebi Miso Ramen ($5.80++, $7.80++ with egg) and Chicken Karaage ($4.80++).

You will need to jostle for seats when you visit The Salted Plum’s second outlet at Suntec City. The self-service eatery had a full house when we popped by during lunchtime, with tables covered in rice bowls and small plates. If you’re coming in a group of four and want to sample a bit of everything, opt for The TSP Experience ($100+).
Exclusive to this outlet is the sharing menu which presents a feast of 13 dishes including their famous Lu Rou 2.0, Pork Chop, Burnt Chilli Chicken and Cold Tofu with Fried Century Egg. The set also comes with free-flow drinks, and unlimited short-grain rice. No paiseh piece will be left when it comes to the Lu Rou 2.0, where the luscious chunks of pork belly soak up the herby braised sauce. The Oyster Omelette was another favourite, with its fluffy egg and plump oysters.

Starting as a speakeasy-style steakhouse, Fat Belly has expanded its space to a stylish 52-seater restaurant. It is not surprising, as this steakhouse at Serene Centre serves a range of premium beef cuts. Try out their charcoal-grilled 400 Day Grain Fed F1 Wagyu Marble Score 8-9 Rump Cap ($55++) for some smoky beefy flavours.
Steaks are not all they have up their sleeve, as they also make desserts in-house. Take a bite into their Basque Burnt Cheesecake ($12++). Unlike traditional cheesecakes that are on the dense side, this dessert was surprisingly light and fluffy.

Westies can rejoice as there’s a new cafe at Bukit Batok. Kick back and relax at friendly neighbourhood cafe, Cuppafield. They mainly serve Western dishes, but their menu boasts a few Asian dishes such as Crispy Thai Dory Fish ($10.80). You’ll get a bit of sweetness and spiciness within this dish.
Their Ondeh Ondeh Cake ($6.80) is a must-try for those who have a sweet tooth. Subtle pandan layers are layered with a gula melaka and coconut filling, reminiscent of an actual ondeh ondeh.

Residents of Tampines would be happy to know there’s a new cafe in the neighbourhood. Craze Kitchen serves Western fare at nett prices, and is gaining traction for their pasta. This Muslim-owned cafe serves a massive Chicken Aglio Olio ($10) that leaves you satisfied without breaking the bank.
Seafood lovers should try their Fish Fillet Carbonara ($10), where two thick fish fillets are served with linguine. With nett prices and generous servings, Craze Kitchen definitely gives you bang for your buck.

Permanently parked in Funan, Trufflelicious serves all things truffle. A must-have for any cheese lover is their Truffle Grilled Cheese Sandwich ($12) that comes with a side of nachos and cheese. Be quick to pull apart this sandwich before the cheese cools down for the ultimate #cheesepull!
Their Truffle Sukiyaki Beef Don ($12) brings together sweet and savoury notes from the combination of truffle shavings and sukiyaki marinated beef slices. Each dish is topped off with freshly grated black truffle.

Getting the perfect souffle is a work of art. A slight change in the oven’s temperature will cause a souffle to either collapse or rise too high. Soufflé has managed to get the temperature down to pat—pushing out souffles that are puffed up beautifully, and don’t sink immediately after serving. Housed in a beautiful space in Duxton Road, this new French restaurant makes for a good spot for weekend brunches.
Souffles are the key player on the menu, where each main comes with a small side of souffle—sorta like a side of fries or rice. Full of punchy, piquant flavours is the Laksa Souffle ($23++), which features a side of juicy prawns and laksa sauce to pour over. The Blanquette de Veau with Mini Comté Soufflé ($32++)—comprising slow-cooked veal stew with white wine and cream—is comfort food at its best, with rich, milky flavours that pair well with the cheesy souffle.

Souffle pancakes are always a winner, and Fluff Stack has them in spades. Located at Suntec City, this new cafe sells a slew of jiggly towers—each boasting tantalising flavours and toppings. We sank our teeth into the Strawberry Cheese Souffle Pancakes ($12.80), Hazelnut Chocolate Souffle Pancakes ($13.80), and Mango Passion Fruit Souffle Pancakes ($14.80), and enjoyed them all.
However, our top favourite was, by far, the Mango Passion Fruit Souffle Pancake. Drenched in tart passion fruit compote and served with creamy coconut sago, the dish had the right mix of sweetness and sourness. We especially loved the honey mango that came with the dessert due to its freshness.

Mexican specialist, El Mero Mero reopens after a lengthy five-month renovation. The newly refurbished store is now noticeably brighter and livelier, thanks to its full-length glass windows that are parked at the end of this classy restaurant.
Its menu has also been revamped; the dishes mix both traditional flavours and modern Mexican culinary trends.
The Baja Fish Taco ($14++ for two pieces) is a perfect example of the restaurant’s new cooking philosophy. A thick fillet of toothfish is battered in a light but crispy tempura batter, then wrapped in a warm and fluffy flour tortilla.
You’ll also find a generous dollop of dangerously addictive chipotle mayo inside, giving a touch of heat that pairs beautifully with the buttery-flavoured fish.

Monzen@Gardens replaces the Little Wimbly Lu at its picturesque chill-out spot by the corner of myVillage@Serangoon Gardens. Serving up Japanese-inspired rice bowls, the eatery ought to satisfy the cravings of hungry Serangoon Gardens residents with their tasty fare and generous portions.
A must-try is their Bara Chirashi Don ($15.80+), which comprises chunks of tuna, salmon, ikura, tobiko, and tamago that are laid on a bed of fluffy vinegared sushi rice. We liked how they tossed in pieces of salmon belly inside, giving a pleasant burst of flavourful fattiness to everything.

Sliced Wagyu Beef With Truffle Iberico Tonkotsu ($23.90) has its broth made from Parma ham and Iberico pork bones. This clear pork stone is done in the traditional Chinese way, which results in a continuous boiling process that rids the soup of any impurities. It’s then mixed with black truffle trimmings, along with white truffle oil that’s specially crafted just for this flavourful blend of noodles.
