10 Salted Egg Yolk Dishes Including Salted Egg Ma La Xiang Guo And Tonkotsu Ramen

Chow down these unique salted egg yolk dishes

It’s been three to four years now, but it seems like the craze for salted egg yolk hasn’t died down. If a new stall pops up along your neighbourhood, you wouldn’t even be surprised to find a dish incorporating salted egg yolk on the menu. While some creations have been pretty gimmicky, there’s no denying the difference this golden liquid brings with its distinct taste. So if you love all things S.E.Y., check out these 10 unique salted egg yolk dishes!

1. Salted Egg Yolk Tonkatsu Ramen

Salted egg yolk and tonkotsu may seem like an unlikely pairing, but the Salted Egg Tonkotsu Ramen ($8.80) served at Ramen Taisho proves that it’s a lethal combination. Paired with specially concocted shoyu and mirin, the salted egg heightens the broth with its savoury accents. Wrapping up this symphony is the fork-tender chashu, which lends smokiness to the full-bodied soup.

2. Salted Egg Xiang Guo

Yup, your eyes aren’t deceiving you – salted egg yolk xiang guo is a thing! Found exclusively at Three Good Guys, this spin-off features ingredients smothered in salted egg yolk and adorned with fish skin. Actual pieces of salted egg are added to the xiang guo, supplying the bowl with a rich saltiness.

Prices here are pretty affordable, with their meat and seafood setting you back $2 and $3 respectively. And just like ma la xiang guo, pork belly is a must-order, as the meat sponges up the bold tang of the sauce.

3. Salted Egg Yolk Pork Burger

A sister branch of the famous Keng Eng Kee Seafood, Wok In Burger wows you with zi charinspired burgers. Their Salted Egg Pork Burger ($9.80) reels you in from the first bite with the savoury rush of salted egg. Chasing behind it are notes of chilli padi and curry leaf, which injected a much-needed piquancy to the sauce. That being said, the robust gravy doesn’t dominate the spotlight, providing room for the luscious porkiness of the cutlet to shine.

4. Salted Egg Yolk Chicken Cutlet Noodles

What makes salted egg yolk sauce so addictive is its creaminess. And Tay Kee Noodle House taps into that with their Salted Egg Chicken Cutlet Noodles ($5/$6). Resting under a blanket of gold, the ramen noodles soak up the salted egg yolk sauce to create a carbolicious treat. The cherry on the cake is the fried chicken topping that was crunchy and packed with umami.

5. Salted Egg Yolk Nasi Lemak

Given our love for both nasi lemak and salted egg yolk, it seemed inevitable for Adimann to come up with their Nasi Lemak Chicken Cutlet with Salted Egg Yolk Sauce ($8.50). Redolent of curry leaves, the sauce enhances the succulent slab of meat with bold accents of salted egg yolk. Topping off this filling treat is a hill of basmati rice. While it only carried traces of coconutty sweetness, its light taste married nicely with the rich flavours of the cutlet.

6. Salted Egg Chicken Bao

We usually associate mantou with kong bak pau or chilli crab. But Bao Makers has proven to us that this versatile bun suits almost any topping. The sweet buns are complemented by the creamy sauce, bringing balance to their Salted Egg Chicken Bao ($4.30++). If that isn’t shiok enough, the fried chicken will seal the deal for you. Juicy on the inside and crisp on the outside, the meat pampers you with its buttery and robust tang.

Staring at the Salted Egg Yolk ($3.60/$4.60/$5.80) ice-cream, you may dismiss Tom’s Palette as another wannabe jumping on the salted egg bandwagon. Yet, this flavour has been a staple of their menu since 2010. What keeps regulars returning for the dessert is its alluring combination of sweet and savoury. Furthermore, bits of salted egg are hidden in the ice-cream, lending a grainy texture to it.

Big Street Singapore takes salted egg yolk dishes to another level with its IG-worthy Salted Egg Prata Bomb ($6). Have your cameras ready, as the slightest touch unleashes a luxurious stream of molten yellow liquid. The fluffy prata mops up the honeyed and salty sauce well, making it a match made in heaven. If you find this pairing too jelak, the starfruit and strawberry served on the side will cleanse your palate with their refreshing zing.

On top of the gorgeous desserts, FATCAT Ice Cream Bar is also popular with foodies for their Gourmet Charcoal Waffles ($6). Drizzled in their house-made salted egg yolk sauce, these crisp and fluffy treats are an addictive blend of candied and salty. Owing to the addition of dried lavender, tinges of floral sweetness lace these waffles.

Don’t forget to top up your dish with a scoop of their Butter Beer ($4.50) and White Peach Sangria ($4.50) ice-cream!

10. Salted Egg Yolk Xiao Long Bao

Halal xiao long bao is a rarity in Singapore, making the 6 in 1 Chicken Dumpling ($13 for six pieces) worthy of a trip down to Yu Long Quan. While the dish also features flavours such as laksa and chilli crab, the highlight is their salted egg yolk chicken dumpling. Bursting the fragile skin unleashes a torrent of salted egg yolk, which adds depth to the collagen-rich broth and chicken meat.
