Steak Sudaku Review: $16.80++ Omi Wagyu And Gyukatsu With 4.7-Star Google Rating

Steak Sudaku has affordable Omi Wagyu beef from $16.80++

Omi beef is rare in Singapore and notoriously expensive—the only other place we’ve reviewed that serves it is Ushiyama Yakiniku. That’s a shame, because this Wagyu is considered among Japan’s finest, prized for its exceptional marbling and rich, buttery flavour. Fortunately, Steak Sudaku makes it more accessible, offering Omi beef dishes from just $16.80++ across its three outlets nationwide. As Singapore’s largest and only importer of Omi beef, it’s able to keep prices relatively low.

Recently, we were invited to try some of Steak Sudaku’s signature items, as well as their new Omi gyukatsu. Here’s what we thought.

Food at Steak Sudaku

If you’re looking for the most affordable Omi beef option on the menu, that’s going to be the Omi Beef Diced Steak ($16.80++), which gets you 100g of the prized Wagyu on a hotplate. Unfortunately, we were not served this cut, so we’re unable to comment on its quality

We were, however, served one of the more premium cuts on Steak Sudaku’s menu: the A5 Grade Marbled Omi Beef Steak (39.80++). Also served in a cow-shaped hot plate alongside corn, carrot, peas, potato wedges, garlic, and a slice of butter, this dish had a distinctly Japanese family-restaurant feel, likely aligning with the eatery’s casual dining concept.

While we appreciate the sizzling warmth of the hot plate, it very much diminished our enjoyment of such high-quality beef. The continuous heat meant the Omi beef went from medium rare to almost well-done in no time at all—just look at the lack of myoglobin, that red juice you get from steak. What should have been a tender, melt-in-your-mouth experience quickly turned chewy and tougher than expected.

The dish was also quite greasy and heavy on the flavours overall. The combination of butter, garlic, and the various sauces drizzled on the hot plate meant that the steak got jelak really quickly.

The hotplate setup seemed better suited for the Premium A5 Omi Beef 100% Hamburg Steak ($24.80++). Since doneness is less of an issue with hamburger steaks, we could mostly enjoy the beef for how succulent it was, with the sweet tanginess of ketchup to lift the flavours.

We were excited for the new Omi Beef Gyukatsu ($42.80++), which also arrived in a hot plate, though here it was more decorative than functional—there was no sizzle at all. We reviewed the famous Gyukatsu Kyoto Katsugyu in the past, and compared to that, the ones here appear considerably chonkier.

Now, aside from the cut of Omi beef being quite large, that chonk was down to the incredibly crispy batter, which was almost biscuit-like. Beneath all the crunch was this fork-tender, buttery meat—and that massive textural contrast made this so fun to eat.

To be fair, this cut can also get quite jelak due to the intense fat marbling of Omi beef, so you’ll need to dip it into the gyukatsu sauce or mustard to cut through some of that richness.

The Omi Beef Garlic Butter Rice($17.80++) allows one to enjoy Omi beef as a rice dish, and it was a pretty decent one at that. Each chunk had all the soft and juicy goodness of Omi beef, but in a bite-sized form, perfect for enjoying with a pile of rice and other ingredients.

Ambience at Steak Sudaku

We visited Steak Sudaku’s Telok Ayer outlet, which occupies a rather narrow space with just a handful of tables and a long counter with bar-style seating. It isn’t the most comfortable place to dine at, and all the sizzling steaks mean your clothes may carry the smell after. But if you’re just looking for a casual spot for steaks, the ambience here will suffice.

Steak Sudaku is a three-minute walk from Telok Ayer MRT Station. Do note that this outlet does not charge GST, so prices on the menu will be adjusted accordingly.

Steak Sudaku – Eatbook Review

Steak Sudaku undoubtedly serves quality Omi steaks, though we wonder if the use of hot plates sometimes holds the food back. Still, for an affordable introduction to Omi beef, this spot is a solid choice.
