Kakigori: Japanese shaved ice desserts packed with various fillings, covered in flavoured syrups, and finished with sweet condensed milk. To me, this popular Japanese dessert is a fancier form of ice kacang that’s perfect for Singapore’s sultry weather. The Assembly Ground at ION Orchard is where you can enjoy this refreshing treat in five different flavours.
The Matcha Strawberry ($19.50++) kakigori went viral on TikTok recently, garnering close to a million views at the time of writing. This seasonal flavour features chewy strawberry mochi and sweet strawberry compote within, with a delicious combination of matcha syrup, strawberry milk, and lemon condensed milk drizzle, topped with almond praline crumb, and creamy white chocolate sauce as the finishing touches.
If you prefer fruity shaved ice desserts without any tea elements, get the Strawberry Peach Melba ($19++) instead; you get a hearty serving of strawberries, peaches, and almond praline at the core.
Besides the trendy Matcha Strawberry, their Thai Green Tea Apple Pie ($17++) is another steady seller. This dessert stars a delicious mix of cinnamon apple compote and Thai green milk tea shaved ice, which is then topped with some cookie crumbs and condensed milk.
Their kakigori also comes in a Chocolate Banana ($18++) flavour, which is hard to go wrong in our books. You’ll see chocolate malt flakes, condensed milk, and a banana brulee on the outside, encasing bananas in butterscotch sauce and chocolate milk.
While you can drop by the cafe just to enjoy these Japanese shaved ice desserts, The Assembly Ground’s menu offers an extensive selection of breakfast items, appetisers, and mains too! For easy access, they are located in the basement of ION Orchard, which is directly connected to Orchard MRT Station.Â
In related news, check out Ghost Kakigori at NEX, where you can get strawberry brulee shaved ice, taro dorayaki and more. Alternatively, read our Orchard food guide if you’re in the area.Â
