This Hidden Warung In Bali Has Dreamy Rice Paddy Views And Mains Under $4

Warung Gauri in Ubud Bali has hidden rice paddy views

While eateries with rice paddy views are plentiful in Bali, it’ll probably be tough to find one that’s more affordable than Warung Gauri. There’s a high chance you won’t come across Warun Gauri if you don’t actively search for it, as the hidden gem is tucked away in an obscure, quiet alley in Ubud.

From the outside, Warung Gauri looks small with a single “window seat” overlooking the dreamy rice paddy fields, but once you’re inside, you’ll realise the eatery is a lot more spacious.

The warung has large tables for bigger groups inside, as well as an indoor garden with a small koi pond, which adds to the tranquil Balinese experience.

Motorbike rental services are also available here for adventurous tourists who’d like to explore Ubud at their own pace.

The menu here offers simple Indonesian dishes with the likes of mie goreng, nasi campur, and nasi goreng. Prices are also extremely affordable, with most mains priced below $4.

We ordered the Gado Gado (IDR25K/~$2.25), an Indonesian salad dish consisting of tofu, tempeh, and mixed vegetables dressed in a delicious peanut sauce. The dish’s sweet and tangy flavours definitely got our appetites rolling.

Unlike most gado gado dishes we’ve tried in Bali, Warung Gauri version was non-spicy, with more emphasis on the savoury, nutty peanut flavours. Our gado gado also came with crushed keropok, which was sprinkled onto the salad for extra crunch!

Our next dish was the Mie Goreng Special (IDR45K/~$4.06): mie goreng, vegetables, chicken, egg, and a bundle of six satay sticks.

The noodles were on the soft side and a little overcooked, with a hint of sweetness from the kecap manis. I’m not complaining, though, as I enjoyed its homemade flavours.

The star of this dish was the satay. It’s marinated in dark soya sauce and sprinkled with white sesame seeds. Despite not being served with peanut sauce, the satay was savoury enough to enjoy on its own.

We wrapped up the meal with the Black Rice Pudding (IDR25K/~$2.25), which stars sticky black rice cooked in coconut milk. The warm dessert had a slightly gooey texture, with a natural sweetness from the coconut cream.
