You can’t escape the wave of nostalgia that strikes when you step into A&W. The OG burger joint in Singapore now operates two outlets locally ─ one at AMK Hub and the other at Jewel. It’s a cardinal sin not to order their signature Root Beer Float ($3.50), best paired with A&W’s most popular burger, the Mozza Burger (from $7.50). Those looking for something more sinful can try their Cream Cheese Burger Combo ($10.90) which comes with either a chicken or beef patty. Don’t leave without trying the Curly Fries ($3.40) too!

Akimitsu is an award-winning tendon franchise hailing from the Asakusa province in Tokyo. This outlet, opened in 2018, is their third in Singapore after Vivocity and Plaza Singapura. Tendon, short for tempura donburi, is their speciality.
The Signature Tendon Bowl ($14.90) here is inexpensive, especially considering how it comes with chawanmushi, miso soup, and free-flow pickles on the side. If tempura isn’t for you, there are other options like the Pork & Egg Don ($12.90) and the Salmon Teriyaki Makunouchi Bento ($20.90) on the menu for you to choose from.

This goodness translates into the menu and the food, where Western cuisine is served with a local twist, with dishes like Salted Egg Prawn Pasta ($13.80) and snacks such as Sambal Cheese Fries ($6.50). They also recently launched a series of lunch sets that are available every weekday from 11am to 5pm, from $10.80. Each includes the soup of the day and a glass of iced lemon tea.

There’s something comforting about digging into a bowl of springy wanton noodles, and the kitchen at ENG’s Wantan Noodle delivers on this craving. A small Wantan Mee ($4.50) comes with savoury wantons, sliced char siew, blanched veggies, and crispy pork lard on top of springy noodles that have been tossed in fragrant oil. The star, however, is their super spicy chilli that has a cautionary label on every bottle. Add on a bowl of Boiled Wantans (from $3) if you’re still feeling hungry!

It’s hard to find a true-blue Singaporean who hasn’t dined at Fish & Co. The casual seafood restaurant is a household name most famous for their Best Fish and Chips ($19.95). Spice things up by opting for the Salted Egg Fish and Chips (S$20.95), or Singapore Fish and Chips ($19.95), which has a very Singaporean chilli crab sauce.
If you’re looking for an inexpensive lunch, go for their Value Lunch sets which start at $8.95 for the standard Fish and Chips, while the most expensive set is the Combo ($14.95) which features either the Grilled Lemon Butter White Fish with Fried Fish or Salmon and the Grilled Peri Peri Chicken with Fried Fish or Salmon.

You can’t miss the familiar fragrance of barbecued meat the moment you step onto the fourth floor of AMK Hub. The smell is courtesy of I’m Kim Korean BBQ & Shabu Shabu, one of the more affordable all-you-can-eat buffet restaurants that combine two popular cooking styles from Korea and Japan.
A buffet lunch on weekdays costs only $16.90 for adults and $13.90 for students and seniors, and a top-up of $10 on weekends. Buffet dinners from Monday to Thursday are a little more pricey at $26.90 per adult and $24.90 for students. However, the price from Friday to Sunday will only cost an additional $1. Do note that dining durations are capped at 90 minutes for groups below three, while groups of four and above are allowed 120 minutes to feast on all the bulgogi they want.

It’s always nice to have the option to munch on affordable Japanese fare, especially if it’s omurice. Koji-San is one of the many smaller eateries in the basement of AMK Hub, and they specialise in this homely omelette dish. Their bestsellers include the Omu Curry Rice ($8.80) that you can have with either pork or chicken. Koji-San has also a more premium Iron Chef series that features dishes like Ebi Chilli with Omu Rice ($12) and Wagyu Beef Saikoro Steak with Omu Rice ($18.90).

You can’t go wrong with a rich, hearty bowl of soup at The Soup Spoon. The restaurant has made international flavours a lot more accessible with menu favourites like Boston Clam Chowder and Tokyo Chicken Stew on the menu. If you can’t decide on a single soup, you can opt for their Half and Half Set ($8.90) so you can have two different bowls! There are also a variety of carbs you can pair your soup with, like a Pot Pie ($11.90), Bread Bowl ($10.50), Flatbread ($12.50), or Red Rice ($11.90).

The sizzling of food on the hotplate at Pepper Lunch outlets is an instantly recognisable sound. Here, you’re given the illusion of being the chef as the ingredients are merely assembled on a piping-hot teppan for you to cook to your preferred doneness. As of October 2020, Pepper Lunch has also introduced a New Zealand Rib Eye Steak ($19.90) that is served with sweet corn and broccoli on the side. Students nearby can also capitalise on the affordable student meals which start from $7.20 and include a soft drink.
