Toby’s Estate first started 16 years ago in Sydney. Founder Toby Smith learned to grow, roast and brew coffee at coffee plantations in South America before opening his own place. Singapore’s outlet was opened in 2011. Sourcing beans from all over the world, Toby’s Estate roasts and serves a wide variety of coffee daily. Picturesquely situated by the Singapore River, the cafe also offers some delicious breakfast. My favourite has got to be their Eggs Benedict ($20+), served in three different styles. Brooklyn Style comes with stewed beef and sauteed mushrooms, while Rodyk Style comes with smoked salmon and greens.

The word “melba” from Cafe Melba comes from a combination of “Melbourne” and “Asia”. Not surprisingly, this cafe offers mostly Western fare and a handful of Asian dishes. Their outlets have vastly different concepts. While the one at Mediapolis in one-north is comfortable and belongs to the kind of cafes you’d sit in for hours to read a book at, its Goodman Arts Centre outlet is more family-friendly and even has a bouncy castle! Fill your tummy with a Full Melba Breakfast ($25++) that includes pork sausage, eggs, bacon, cherry tomatoes, baked beans, mushrooms, mini vegetable rosti, and toast.

Cafe by day and bistro-bar by night, the idea for Rokeby’s double identity came from the cafe-lined streets in Perth. With interesting options such as Foie Gras Benedict ($19.90++) and Vegemite Wings ($9.90++), Rokeby is sure to have something you’ve never tried before. The House of Robert Timms serves Aussie-style meals. Eggs Benedict ($19++) is one of their savoury all-day breakfast items, and they’ve also got sweeter options such as Pancake with Berries ($13.80++). Other than breakfast food, they also serve a variety of mains including burgers and pasta, as well as classic Australian desserts such as Lemon or Orange Lamingtons ($4.50++) and Australia’s famous Over The Top Milkshakes ($16++) in a variety of flavours.

One of this year’s Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants, Burnt Ends is an Australian-style barbeque restaurant at Keong Saik. Their menu changes daily, featuring only fresh ingredients available each day, and their meats are cooked in machines designed by the head chef himself, at temperatures as high as 700 degrees Celsius in order to bring out the best flavour possible. With counter seats in front of an open kitchen, you’ll get to watch your food being prepared on the spot. Burnt Ends is incredibly popular, so making reservations in advance is highly recommended!

Jones the Grocer’s flagship store in Sydney not only served delicious food, but also sold gourmet products and ingredients that weren’t readily available elsewhere. In addition to that, they housed a walk-in cheese room. While that store has since closed, Jones the Grocer has expanded and its outlet in Singapore offers pretty much the same. They serve breakfast dishes such as Jones Big Breakfast ($28++), which comes with English pork sausage, bacon, eggs, forest mushrooms, roasted roma tomato, baked beans, sautéed baby spinach and hash brown with sourdough toast. An assortment of cheese platters and mains are available as well.

Of course, we won’t forget the original creators of over-the-top shakes. Patissez, which started in Canberra, has opened shop in Holland Village. Their Freakshakes ($14++) come in a variety of flavours including Muddy Pat and Pretzella. Each overloaded milkshake includes all sorts of desserts on top, such as brownies, pretzels and marshmallows.
