Baristart Coffee – Famous Japanese Cafe Opens At Tanjong Pagar Serving Premium Hokkaido Milk Ice-Cream

It’s the start of the New Year. And if you’re looking for a new coffee joint to tide you through the workday, Baristart Coffee is a good place to start. A famous Japanese cafe hailing from Hokkaido, the brew from this coffee chain is so well-received due to the milk they use.

While they are known for giving a selection of premium Hokkaido milk to order with your brew, this overseas outpost will only offer Biei Jersey milk – the cafe’s most highly-sought-after milk.

Note that this is no ordinary milk. The milk is sourced from a rare breed of Brown Jersey cattle that makes up only 1% of the total cow population in Hokkaido. It’s like the wagyu of the milk world.

For the non-believers, order a latte ($6.70) and be amazed by how creamy and rich the milk is, thanks to the high butterfat content.  It’s less sweet than your ordinary milk too, allowing you to savour the full-bodied aroma of their Arabica coffee blend. The milk is flown in every month to ensure utmost freshness.

If you want to best savour the taste of this premium milk, get their Hokkaido Biei Jersey Milk Soft Serve ($6.50). The swirly tower is extremely buttery in texture, with a strong milky tang. It’s far from cloying, and doesn’t leave an unpleasant fatty coating on your tongue like most ice-creams.

Spam your IG-story with their Shiro Kuma Hokkaido, which is essentially shaved ice that’s shaped like a bear and served with the milk ice-cream.

Aside from brews and sweet treats, you will also find a range of hot scrummy grub. Items we came across were their rice bowls, namely the Obihiro Butadon boasting succulent pork belly. They also have a hearty Carbonara that’s made with Hokkaido milk and topped with bacon.

The place can get quite packed though, so it’s best to go there with only a friend in tow.
