Whether it’s the music, movies, or fashion, I’ve always gravitated towards all things 80s and 90s. That’s why I was glad to come across Between Buns Deli, a newly opened retro deli in Tanjong Pagar, serving up fresh sandwiches made with sourdough, brioche, and schiacciata bread.

If their name rings a bell, you may know them from their beginnings as a COVID-era home-based deli back in 2020. Since then, they’ve built a loyal following, fuelled by a series of pop-ups over the years.

Fast-forward six years, and this new deli marks its first–ever physical space. A quick search online, and you’ll find that they’ve already amassed an impressive 4.8-star rating on Google, despite opening just two weeks ago!

Step into the restaurant, and you’ll feel as if you’ve been transported straight onto the set of Grease, with the bright, colourful signage, comfy booth seating, and vibrant pop art displayed on the walls.

Food-wise, they’ve got two menus to choose from: breakfast from 9am to 11am, and lunch from 11am to 4pm.

If you’re heading down for brekkie, be sure to order their popular Chicken Sausage & Egg Muffin ($13), featuring a juicy chicken sausage patty, a thick, fluffy omelette, arugula, oozy cheddar, and their house-made fermented chilli mayo, all sandwiched between two slightly chewy English Muffins.

Lunch go-ers shouldn’t miss out on their Oxtail Melt ($23): a crunchy sourdough sandwich packed with tender, succulent 24-hour-braised oxtail, melty cheddar, pickled cucumber slices, and their special chilli mayo.

The Fried Chicken ($16) is another standout, pairing a huge, crispy and juicy slab of fried chicken with fresh iceberg lettuce, gherkins, cheddar, and creamy smoked tartar sauce, all between two buttery brioche buns.

They’ve also got several schiaccaiata, AKA a crispy flatbread sandwich drizzled with olive oil, similar to focaccia. Top picks include the Spicy Chicken ($14) with chipotle sauce, and their Roasted Broccolini ($14), starring smoky roasted broccolini, creamy stracciatella cheese, tahini, fragrant red pesto, and arugula.

End off on a sweet note with one of their tasty desserts, such as the Double Chip Cookie ($5.50), pairing sweet chocolate with salty, crispy Ruffles potato chips. Otherwise, go for the Sticky Toffee Pudding ($13) for a fudgy-sweet treat, served alongside a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

The restaurant is known to get quite crowded during peak hours, so we recommend heading down early to beat the crowds.

Between Buns Deli is located at SBF Centre, a quick two-minute walk from Tanjong Pagar MRT Station. It’s also within walking distance of Telok Ayer and Shenton Way MRT Stations.
