This Hidden Staff Canteen Has XL BBQ Fish, Klang BKT And More In Jurong East

Billion Food Point is a hidden staff canteen in Jurong East

As broke foodies, my friends and I enjoy exploring the island for affordable eats. While searching for wallet-friendly eateries to check out, one place that recently came to our attention was Billion Food Point, a staff canteen tucked away at International Business Park. The Jurong East food court offers everything from local fare to Thai and Korean cuisine.

When we arrived, we weren’t sure if we were at the right place, as the entrance was inconspicuous. After wandering around the ulu area in the hot sun, we finally came across a signboard that read “BILLION”.

Upon entering, we were greeted by a huge dining area. It was spacious, surely seating more than 100 diners, and most importantly, air-conditioned!

There are nine stalls in total, with a decent variety of cuisines to choose from.

A standout is the Bak Kut Teh stall, which serves up Klang BKT.

There are five categories on the menu: rice, noodles, soup, sides, and mains featuring fish head prepared in three ways, the latter available via pre-orders made a day in advance.

We had to try the stall’s namesake dish, the Bak Kut Teh ($6.50), which comes with a bowl of plain rice and a pot of herbal pork rib soup.

We were wowed by the ingredients: meaty pork ribs, beancurd skin, mushrooms, cabbage, garlic cloves, handmade pork meatballs, and pork belly slices all submerged in a soothing broth.

Another popular stall is Yummy Yong Tau Fu. While most of the space is taken up by their display of ingredients, they also offer several soup and noodle dishes, all priced under $5.

A crowd favourite is the Laksa ($4), available with bee hoon or yellow noodles.

The bowl came with a generous serving of noodles, cooked to a perfect al dente, topped with tofu slices, fishcakes, crunchy tau gay, and a fried hard-boiled egg, where the yolk added a pleasant creaminess to the spicy and coconutty broth.

If you love Thai food, you have to check out Mama’s Thai Kitchen, which offers an extensive menu with over 30 dishes.

If you’re unsure of what to get, we recommend the Stir Fry Hor Fun ($6), starring firm yet silky hor fun tossed with eggs, kailan, and a choice of prawns, pork, or chicken, in a delicious sweet-savoury sauce.

Seated next to us, we saw a diner enjoying a whole saba fish. Curious to know where he got it from, he directed us to Xin Xu Japanese & Korean Cuisine.

Their menu is quite extensive, offering rice bowls, soups, sizzling plates and more, but the star has got to be their BBQ Saba Fish Set ($5.80).

The set came with not just one fish, but also an additional half serving of saba! You also get a bowl of seaweed egg drop soup, rice, and kimchi to pair with.

The fish was soft and tender, and we enjoyed the hint of smokiness from the grill.
