I love burritos. They may seem mediocre and nondescript on the outside, but are filled with delightful things such as guacamole, salsa and melted cheese. Unfortunately, Singapore doesn’t have many Mexican restaurants, and places that serve good burritos are even scarcer. Burrito lovers, here are 10 places to pick up a burrito and wrap yourself in bliss until Chipotle decides to come to us.
The burritos at Don’t Tell Mama aren’t the standard beige roll you’ll get at a typical Mexican restaurant. They come covered in cheese and jalapenos, and pack a spicy kick that keeps me going back for more. One downside is that there are only two burritos on the menu – prawn ($12++) and veggie ($12++). Wash off that post-burrito thirst with beer-garitas ($22++) and soju ritas ($25++), which feature bottles of beers or soju upended in margaritas. Don’t Tell Mama shares a spot with the double-identity cafe The Da Bang, so drop by in the day for coffee and brunch!

El Patio serves Tex-Mex dishes in an alfresco setting. Their burritos ($18++) might look a little unassuming, but are bursting with staples such as frijoles refritos (refried beans), spicy salsa and guacamole! Portions are quite big, and you can choose to further customise your burrito by adding more sour cream and guacamole. Their guac and salsa are made fresh every day. Another must-try are quesadillas ($12 to 17++), which are massive enough to be considered mains, despite being housed under “Appetisers” on the menu.

Facing the Singapore River, Hombre Cantina provides a little respite from the busy pace of the CBD just a few streets away. Burritos ($17+) are usually lunch fare here, while people who stop by at night prefer something lighter in the form of tacos ($17+) and nachos ($17+) to go with drinks. The head chef hails from Oaxaca, Mexico and brought with him recipes of delicious spice mixes and salsa. Tip: service charge only applies during dinner, so head over for lunch instead!

Of course Muchachos will make the list for a guide to burritos in Singapore. With their signature creamy guac, customisable burritos and booze, they’re a definite go-to for burritos. Burritos here come in two sizes, the original Silver Bullet ($12) and a slightly smaller one known as the burritino ($9). If wraps aren’t your thing, opt for a burrito bowl, which is pretty much a deconstructed burrito.

Make a beeline for Vatos Urban Tacos’ one-of-a-kind Vatos Burrito ($14++), which comes with sauteed kimchi, french fries, and chipotle mayo. I had mine with prawn, pork and chicken, and it was like Christmas in a burrito. Each mouthful created different bursts of flavours, and their signature Vatos hot sauce added a fiery kick to the seasoning. Honey Tequila Chicken Wings ($18++) are definitely worth a try too. The only complaint I have is that their price tags on the menu are tiny. The bill will definitely shock you sober if you ordered too much when you’re drunk on one too many tequilas.

Viva Mexico is another one of those places with Mexican chefs at the helm to ensure you get legit Mexican fare. While they are filled with the typical ground beef and beans, the best thing about Viva Mexico’s burritos ($12.95++) is that they come with guacamole as well. No more busting your budget to add guac into your burrito. Plus, a little bowl of chips and two kinds of salsa turn up as free appetisers. Their frozen lime margaritas are to die for if you fancy a little tipple at the end of the day.

Super Loco’s breakfast burritos ($18+) are packed with breakfast staples such as scrambled eggs and cheese, and they’re definitely a refreshing change from kaya toast and soft-boiled eggs. In case burritos aren’t your thing, pick up some Mexican sandwiches instead. Pulled pork sandwich ($15+) comes with tangy apple slaw mixed with tender slow-braised pork shoulder and refried beans, while hongos sandwich ($14+) is a slightly sweeter mix with caramelised onions, sweet corn, tamarind ketchup, plantain and grilled portobello mushrooms.

Afterwit is one of those places with crazy food combis you’ll either love or hate. The burritos at this halal-certified joint cost $17 to $19, which might be a bit steep for beans and rice rolled together, but their unique flavours are worth a try. Go for cranberry turkey bacon if you’re missing Christmas already, or maple smoked duck for something sweeter. Alternatively, take your pick from hawker-food-inspired flavours, such as nasi lemak burrito or beef briyani burrito. Whatever you choose, you’ll end up with a burrito that probably wouldn’t be considered a burrito anywhere else in the world.

Situated in the CBD near Tanjong Pagar MRT Station, Poblano’s lower prices make it a popular choice for among the working crowd. If you’re closer to the Telok Ayer side of the CBD, check out MexOut’s char-grilled chicken burrito ($9.90+/$12.90+). The chicken is juicy and bursting with flavour. Salsa here is made in-house and comes in five flavours: pico de gallo, mango pineapple, fire roasted, salsa verde and salsa picante for those who want a fiery challenge. The mango pineapple salsa adds tang and a fruity flavour to your food, which can be quite confusing for those not used to it.
