Lu rou fan – or braised pork rice – seems to be all the rage these days. It’s like the staple rice dish of 2017 – sorry, chicken rice. Surprisingly, most Taiwanese stores serving lu rou fan tend to price the dish pretty high, with some costing up to $10 a bowl. That to me is ridiculously expensive, and I would rather settle for a $3.50 char siew rice. If you’re like me and will only find comfort in cheap lu rou fan, then you’ll find this list of Taiwanese braised pork rice nifty.

A bowl of lu rou fan at Authentic Mun Chee Kee King of Pig’s Organ Soup will only set you back $1.80. Yes, you read that correctly. Although it’s listed as a side dish, the portion is quite substantial and you can easily fill up with it if you’re not super ravenous. But for a more indulgent meal, complete the dish with their signature Pig’s Organ Soup ($4).

Mr Lorbak’s Braised Pork Rice ($3.50) is a dish you will want to travel for. Boasting the right amount of fat and meat, the succulent pork belly melts in your mouth and carries a herby, decadent aroma. Accompanied with black fungus for an added crunch as well as a braised egg, this is the lu rou fan of my dreams.

A popular lunch joint among CBD-dwellers, Scorch is an unassuming eatery that dishes up waffles, nasi lemak, and of course, lu rou fan. Their Taiwanese Braised Meat Rice ($3/ $5) comes in two portion sizes; the $3 version is good as a sampler, so it’s highly recommended you order the $5 bowl lest you just want a taste. Japanese grains are used for the base, and this helps absorb the mellow, five-spiced dark sauce the pork is marinated with. Pickled cucumbers are also added to alleviate any jelakness from the fatty meat.
