Common Man Coffee Roasters Review: Cosy Brunch Spot In Restored Joo Chiat Shophouse

Common Man Coffee Roasters is a popular cafe in Joo Chiat

The Joo Chiat ‘hood has just got more exciting, with Common Man Coffee Roasters unveiling their third outlet, bringing their brunch fare and specialty coffee to the East. Housed in one of Joo Chiat’s unmistakable heritage shophouses, the interior of this new cafe is decked in light wood, with striking blue and brass finishings, and both indoor, and outdoor seats.

If you’ve not been there, the CMCR flagship on Martin Road has been around since 2013, often drawing long queues for their generous serves of tasty, all-day brunch fare, and artisanal coffee.

With the launch of this latest cafe, CMCR introduces new, outlet-exclusive menu items—Sourdough Pancakes—available in both Savoury and Sweet options, so nobody is left behind. They’re both priced at $24++, the former featuring crispy bacon, a Kampong fried egg, seasoned creamy butter, and pure maple syrup.

For those who prefer the sweeter stuff, go instead for the Sweet Sourdough Pancakes, which are accompanied by a chocolate almond ganache, almond praline, vanilla ice cream, and marmalade.

Some favourites on the food menu that you’ll continue to see at the new Joo Chiat branch include the Common Man Full Breakfast ($29++), for the full works, and Organic Eggs Benedict ($26++) that sit on meltingly tender braised ox cheeks.

Coffee aficionados will be pleased to know that this branch in Joo Chiat has a dedicated filter coffee brewing bar that will showcase seasonally rotated selections of regional, single-origin filter coffees, on top of their signature CMCR espresso-based beverages.

Apart from dining in, CMCR at Joo Chiat will also have a dedicated retail section stocking a range of coffee beans. There’s also outlet-exclusive ceramicware, and their house-made Crunchy Granola, available in a gluten-free Cacao Granola option too!

Other cafes in the area include Kings Cart Coffee Factory, another coffee roaster and cafe. Alternatively, there’s also Okada Coffee And Sweets, a Japanese-inspired cafe!
