Koreans love pairing their instant ramyeon with a beer, so it only makes sense that the Korean supermarket chain, CU, has partnered with Guinness, to introduce unique beer-infused instant noodles.Â
We grabbed the new Guinness Jjajang Ramyun at the FairPrice Finest Woodleigh Mall, but you should be able to find them at other Finest outlets. You can currently get them at a promotional price of $3.30 till 30 April 2025. After which, these will retail at $3.50 a cup.Â
FYI, there are 65g of noodles per cup, which is similar to the size of a small cup of Shin Ramyeon. We love jjajangmyeon just as much as we love a cold pint of beer, so we were excited to see what this novel pairing had to offer.
We prepared our noodles according to the instructions on the cup; add in 200ml of hot water, drain the water after four minutes, add in the two seasoning packets and oil sachet provided, and give it a good mix until the noodles are well-coated in the black bean sauce.Â
Then, we slurped up our first mouthful. The noodles boasted a smoky and sweet jjajang or black bean sauce flavour. The malty notes of Guinness were lacking here, but you get a slight bitterness, perhaps to mimic the hoppiness of stout. We also tasted hints of cinnamon, which added a unique fragrance to the noodles. While there’s no alcohol included in the mix, as stated by FairPrice Finest’s Instagram post, our Korean colleague informed us that beef and pork are listed as ingredients.
To answer the question in our headline, no, these instant noodles did not taste like beer. Nonetheless, it’s a unique and unconventional version of jjajangmyeon that’s worth a try! You can find them at your nearest Fairprice Finest.
