Hello Korea Fair In Orchard Has Heart-Shaped Hotteok, Egg Bread And More Till 6 May

Hello Korea Fair at Takashimaya till 6 May 2024

We must be doing something right in April—as soon as we visited KK Market, a pop-up Korean street food market at Tanglin Mall, there’s yet another event that sounds just as enticing: Hello Korea Fair. Running till 6 May 2024, this Korean fair at Takashimaya Square offers a variety of street food that we think Singaporeans will love. Besides, plenty of trendy fashion, beauty, and lifestyle brands are available too.

Out of their many offerings, Seoul Hotteok’s signature heart-shaped Sarang Hotteok ($7.50) caught my attention right off the bat.

Many will be familiar with this popular winter snack in Korea, which features a deep-fried pancake generously packed with sugar syrup and nuts.

Typically, it’s served as a flat, circular pancake, which you can find here at $6. But here, you can also anticipate a lovely heart-shaped version with a dollop of Nutella instead of the traditional fillings of syrup and nuts. This one had a kueh-like texture, and was expectedly on the sweeter side.

We were also thrilled to see Wooga Jjajang, a hawker stall at Old Airport Road with a 60-year-old jjajangmyeon recipe, set up a kiosk here.

Though they specialise in jjajangmyeon, you can also find cup rice and handmade Korean dumplings at their booth. We wanted one rice and one noodle dish as our carbs, so we got a Pork Belly Bulgogi Cup Rice ($10) and Pork Belly Jjajangmyeon ($10) to try.

My colleague was a fan of their cup rice thanks to the winning combination of toppings: a bed of rice topped with kimchi, potato salad, and pork belly slices. If you’re working around the area, I recommend this as one of your lunch options.

Moving on to the Pork Belly Jjajangmyeon, you can expect a decent serving of soft, thick noodles blanketed in a wok hei-infused black bean sauce.

One can also look forward to the classic Korean egg bread at Eggseoul’s kiosk. These cute egg-shaped treats come in a box of four for $13.95

Traditionally served piping-hot during winter, these feature mildly sweet cakes stuffed with a range of sweet and savoury fillings.

You can either get a box of just Original or a mix of different flavours: among Pizza, Apple Pie, Nutella Custard, and Red Bean Custard

Here’s another familiar face at the fair: MUGUNG, a Korean bibimbap restaurant in Telok Ayer. The last time we paid them a visit in 2023, we appreciated the hearty combination of chewy rice and fresh vegetables. Also, the savoury and well-marinated minced beef was our favourite topping during our visit. You can try their classic Beef Bibimbap ($16.90) at the Hello Korea Fair.

And of course, you can enjoy a spread of Korean street food with the likes of Tteokbokki ($13.60) and Fishcake with Soup ($13.60).

A Korean fair isn’t complete without fried chicken. Keep your eyes peeled for the Fried Chicken Gangjeong (from $9.85), a crispy chicken glazed in a sweet-salty or sweet-spicy sauce depending on what you get. We recommend getting the Chicken and Beer set for an additional $7 for the complete chimaek experience.

If you’re in Orchard, we encourage you to drop by Takashimaya Square and soak in the experience till 6 May 2024.

For legit Korean restaurants in Singapore, read our Kelim Dakdoritang review, where we tried the popular spicy braised chicken. There’s also Ureshii restaurant with Korean-Japanese cuisine such as Jeju abalone porridge and cheese tonkatsu.
