IKEA’s brand new dessert-inspired cakes

When it comes to local desserts, icy sweets like chendol and nostalgic kueh such as  ondeh-ondeh rank high on the satisfaction scale. IKEA Singapore has taken those local treats and transformed them into a line of festive cakes.

From now till 4 June 2019, get a taste of Ondeh-Ondeh ($3 for a slice, $39 for a 1.4kg cake), Pulut Hitam ($45 for a 1.8kg cake) and D24 Durian Chendol ($49 for a 1.4kg cake) to satisfy your traditional dessert desires in cake form.

While the furniture giant is well-known for their bouncy Swedish meatballs and crispy chicken wings, their desserts are nothing to be scoffed at either, with sweet treats like their almond chocolate cake and blueberry cheesecake proving popular.

Ondeh-ondeh is my favourite kueh, with oozy gula melaka and fragrant pandan flavour. The Swedish chain’s cake version seeks to replicate that, featuring streaks of gula melaka that are soaked in a fluffy pandan sponge. It’s then encapsulated by coconut cream, before being  showered with coconut shavings for a double whammy of coconut flavour.

Durian fanatics are likely to make a beeline for the D24 Durian Chendol cake. The King of Fruits makes its presence felt through thick layers of durian cream, chock full of its unmistakable rich flavour. Its pungency is tempered by pockets of gula melaka, while instantly recognisable squiggles of pandan jelly swim in the icing like tadpoles.

With its glut of sticky black glutinous rice and dense layers of sponge, their Pulut Hitam cake seems the most decadent of the lot. It’s also arguably the most eye-catching creation, with its striking black-and-white colour palette and a sheet of jammy pulut hitam glaze on top. Expect great texture from grains of chewy rice studded throughout the filling, as well as a potent punch of coconut milk flavour in its icing.
