Update:Â JQ Pot has permanently closed.
Having recently tried lok lok at Lok Pot, I realised I quite like the experience it involves. The ability to customise my own food is something I absolutely love, and lok lok lets me do just that. When I discovered JQ Pot, the icing on the cake was that they serve a cheese fondue along with lok lok.
JQ Pot is a little-known lok lok spot hidden in a corner of Pasir Panjang Food Centre. They open at noon and serve lok lok and hot pots, and they only serve the cheese fondue when they reopen in the evening for dinner.
We decided to head down to JQ Pot to try their Cheesy Hotpot ($38 nett), which is a BBQ plate served with a cheese fondue and 18 sticks of lok lok. Â Individually, the lok lok sticks are pricey, at $1.60 per stick. This goes down to $1.40 per stick if you order more than 11, $1.20 per stick if you order more than 20, and $1 per stick if you order more than 39.
We chose our sticks from their display window. The selection available was not as extensive as those at other lok lok places. We decided to get a variety of food, including bacon-wrapped asparagus, bacon-wrapped sausages, mushrooms, crabstick, shrimps, beancurd skin, and so on.
We then handed our plate of sticks over to a staff member and went to find a seat. The staff member fried the beancurd skin, and brought it over to us with the rest of the uncooked sticks and a stove. The stove had a grill, which was covered in aluminium, and we were given a large chunk of butter along with it. The pot on top of it contained nacho cheese, and the staff member threw in some shredded mozzarella before lighting the flame.
As the grill heated, we spread the butter around, and placed the sticks on the grill, while occasionally stirring the pot to get the two cheeses to combine. The food cooked pretty quickly, but we had to wait a while before the cheese was fully melted enough for us to dip the food into it.
The food itself was very standard, with no seasoning whatsoever. However, they did have a small condiment station for us to choose which sauces we wanted, and this included a range of different chilli sauces, as well as satay sauce that was served to our table. The satay sauce was unexpectedly spicy, but went well with some of the skewers, such as satay and bacon-wrapped sausages.
Their Thai chilli sauce was the most flavourful, with hints of lemongrass. It was by far my favourite condiment, along with the cheese fondue, and these were the two dips we finished the fastest.
The cheese itself was nothing to rave about, although it did go well with the meat. It was standard nacho cheese with a slightly heightened flavour profile and stringy texture due to the mozzarella. For the price, we felt they could have been more generous with the mozzarella.
JQ Pot is located right behind Pasir Panjang MRT Station, in Pasir Panjang Food Centre. Tucked away in a corner, it isn’t one of the most obvious stalls in the area.
The hawker centre was pretty empty when we got there at around 6pm, but tables quickly started to fill up by 7pm. They have both sheltered and unsheltered seating, and we would recommend sitting at the latter if you order the lok lok, so the smoke doesn’t get stifling.
If you’re craving lok lok, JQ Pot serves enough varieties of it, including standard lok lok, hot pot sets, and cheese fondue, to keep you hooked. The range of skewers offered isn’t the largest, but is sufficient if you aren’t fussy. The skewers also aren’t seasoned, and can be pretty bland if you don’t dip them into the condiments. However, if you are a fan of cheese fondue and lok lok, it might be worth a try.
