925 Yishun Hainanese Chicken Rice Has Been Around Since 1990—Here’s Our Honest Review

925 Yishun Hainanese Chicken Rice has been around since 1990

Chicken rice is our national dish and a staple at nearly every hawker centre, but finding a truly exceptional plate is a whole different story. While hunting for Singapore’s best chicken rice, our team discovered 925 Yishun Hainanese Chicken Rice, which ranked third on our list. It had been a while since our last visit, so we returned to see if their dishes still live up to our expectations. Yishun residents will know that the stall has been around since 1990, drawing long queues every day, especially during the lunch rush.

Food at 925 Yishun Hainanese Chicken Rice

There are only seven items on the menu, each offeringa different combination of rice, chicken, and organ meats. We tried the Chicken Breast Rice ($3.50), the most affordable option, and the Chicken Wing Rice ($4.20) to see how they compared.

Word is the Chicken Breast Rice sells out faster than the rest, but fortunately, we managed to snag a plate. What’s interesting is that every plate comes with not just soup and condiments, but also a side of achar.

For just $3.50, the portion size was decent, and I appreciated that the meat was sliced into long strips, making it a lot easier to eat with every scoop of rice.

The steamed chicken was the best part of this dish. While the meat wasn’t dry or overcooked, it wasn’t the most tender we’ve tried. We dipped it in the chilli, which was punchy and garlicky, though slightly too watery for our liking. Still, we didn’t have any big gripes, as it was quite an enjoyable meal overall—especially for $3.50.

The rice was a tad firmer than we’d hoped, each grain plump and substantial rather than light and fluffy. While it was clearly cooked with a mix of ingredients, none of the flavours stood out. Overall, the rice played second fiddle, letting the other ingredients take the spotlight.

The achar caught our attention as a fun twist to the usual sliced cucumbers that typically accompany chicken rice. Less sweet than most pickles, it worked perfectly as a palate cleanser, refreshing our taste buds between bites of chicken and rice.

We’d recommend spending the extra $0.70 for the Chicken Wing Rice—it was more enjoyable than the Chicken Breast Rice. The wings were served on the side, bathed in a pool of light soy sauce, adding extra flavour and sweetness, unlike the breast meat, which was simply served on top of the rice.

Our favourite part was the thin, gelatinous layer of skin: silky, juicy, and indulgent, pairing well with the rice. The soy sauce was subtle and balanced, letting the chicken’s natural flavours shine through.

Every order was accompanied by a bowl of soup that leaned bland, though we appreciated its clean, unadulterated taste.

Ambience at 925 Yishun Hainanese Chicken Rice

925 Yishun Hainanese Chicken Rice is tucked inside an unassuming coffeeshop that’s a stone’s throw away from Yishun MRT Station. A steady lunch crowd had already formed before noon, but there were still plenty of seats available. And don’t be discouraged by the queue; the efficient staff kept things moving, making the entire process from ordering to self-collection quick and fuss-free.

That said, we’re not sure if the coffeeshop is a smoke-free zone, as a few smokers in the outdoor seating area slightly dampened our experience.

The stall offers value for a quick lunch or dinner for those living in the area. While it might not be worth going out of your way just for the chicken rice, if you’re nearby, the Chicken Wing Rice is definitely worth a try.
