June Coffee Review: New Katong Cafe With Beef Croffle, Pistachio Latte And More

June Coffee is a new brunch cafe in East Coast

The Joo Chiat neighbourhood is home to an array of stylish cafes, including  Cafe Natsu and Within The Walls. Now a new cafe, June Coffee, created by the founders of September Coffee, has recently opened its doors, bringing thick brioche toasts, layered lattes and more to the area.

Intrigued, my colleague and I headed down to June Coffee on a Thursday afternoon to try it for ourselves. Despite arriving slightly after lunch hour, we were surprised to see that the cafe was still quite packed. Thankfully, we did not have to wait too long for our seats.

Food at June Coffee

Though both June Coffee and September Coffee serve Western fare, they offer different mains and sides. To start, we ordered the Beef Tenderloin Croffle ($25++)

I was taken aback by the portion when the dish arrived—it came with a mountain of sliced beef tenderloin, pickled onions, demi-glace, and spicy mayo atop a croffle. It was also served with black pepper sauce on the side.

We really enjoyed how crispy and airy the croffle was. The beef, meanwhile, was extremely tender, providing contrasting textures with the croffle. Taste-wise, I appreciated the tanginess that the pickled onions provided, which prevented the dish from being too heavy. Overall, both my colleague and I enjoyed this a lot.

Next, we got the Truffle Mushroom Pappardelle ($19++) to share. This pasta comprises a mixture of shiitake, king oyster, and shimeiji mushrooms tossed in a truffle cream sauce with fresh pappardelle pasta.

It was a blessing in disguise that the truffle flavour was quite subtle; it would’ve been too overpowering if there was more. My colleague and I enjoyed the earthy flavour of the mushrooms too.

However, we found the pasta to be a tad bit starchy, leaving a doughy sensation in our mouths after each bite. The rich cream sauce used also contributed to the jelak-ness of the dish, which unfortunately made it difficult to finish. Regardless, we appreciated the generous portion of the mushrooms in this dish.

For our last main dish, the server recommended us the Honey, Lemon, and Ricotta French Toast ($17++). The dish was served on a thick slice of brioche toast, with ricotta cheese and pecans on top. It was drizzled with honey for a sweet flavour.

Maybe because my dining partner and I enjoy savoury flavours, this dish was not up our alley. There was also a slight spicy flavour, which we both found hard to appreciate. This dish would probably be better suited for cheese lovers!

We got the House Potato Salad ($10++) for our sharing sides as we wanted something unique, and thankfully, this did not disappoint. This dish was served with roasted baby potatoes, mayo, marinated eggs, bacon, and feta cheese.

The baby potatoes were cut into bite-sized pieces and were evenly coated with mayonnaise. The bacon added a savoury flavour, which made it even more enjoyable. Finally, the addition of the ajitama eggs gave the dish a creamy texture.

June Coffee has a good selection of drinks as well. My colleague opted for the Iced Pistachio Latte ($9++), which had a thick layer of pistachio cream, adding a nutty flavour to the coffee. Matcha lovers will definitely enjoy the Iced Kinako Matcha ($8++), which is topped with sea salt soy foam and kinako powder. They also offer other lattes such as the Black Sesame Latte ($8++), which is another highly popular choice!

All in all, I found the menu to have quite unique dishes and drinks. I quite enjoyed my time there and I loved the atmosphere the cafe gave off. I would definitely recommend this cafe if you’re looking for a date spot!
