This Traditional Provision Shop In Tiong Bahru Market Sells DIY Yusheng For $8

$8 yusheng by Kai Hock Provision

Tiong Bahru is home to many food gems, especially beloved hawker favourites and hidden provision shops only known to the locals. One of such is Kai Hock Provision, a humble provision store located on the ground floor of Tiong Bahru Market, which sells yusheng for just $8.

The humble provision store has been operating in the market since the 1950s, for over 40 years and counting. Second-generation owner Mr Khoo Kai Hock, who has been helping his father with the stall since he was young, now runs it with his wife.

With CNY coming up, you can also get your yusheng fix at the stall for cheap—think $1 per condiment for the DIY option, or $8 for a pre-arranged set. Choose from a plethora of colourful toppings commonly found in most yusheng platters, from pickled radish to ginger, and mix and match to your heart’s desires.

Yusheng can be rather costly, with prices ranging from $20 all the way to over $100, especially if they come with premium toppings such as abalone and salmon. If you’re up for a no-frills, simple lohei that’s also vegetarian-friendly, the yusheng set at Kai Hock Provision comes with the neccessary fixings, sans fish. Included are garnishes such as golden crackers for prosperity, and crushed peanuts to ring in more huat for the household.
