When one-Michelin-starred Hong Kong restaurant Kam’s Roast landed on our shores in 2016, their first branch was met with much fanfare. While the chain’s Orchard restaurant has since closed its shutters, you can still find them at Jewel Changi Airport, alongside two express outlets in ION Orchard and Junction 8. We recently visited the former to check out their lineup of roast meats!
The OG resto Kam’s Roast Goose’s famous roast goose isn’t on the menu, but you’ll find other meats including the crowd favourite 1/4 Roast Duck ($22.80++).
This sharing platter came with chunky duck slices that boasted a delicious fatty layer beneath golden-brown skin. It’s said to be prepared with a secret marinade before it’s roasted to perfection. Each piece was juicy and well-seasoned; it was roast duck done well, but nothing that special to shout about.
I actually preferred their Regular Soya Chicken ($19.60++) instead, which was extremely tender and flavourful. Apparently, Kam’s Roast only uses fresh chicken for this dish!
I recommend dunking each piece into their house-made ginger dipping sauce for a burst of savoury flavours.
If you need something plain to pair with the meats, get a serving of their Special Braised Noodles (from $6.80++). The springy egg noodles formed the ideal canvas for the heavy-tasting meats, as the noods were not too salty or greasy.
Should you want more protein, the Combo Toro Char Siew & Iberico Char Siew ($42.80++) is worth considering. It’s quite the splurge, but you do get a mix of two types of char siew, both made with high-quality meats.
My dining companion gravitated towards the fattier Toro cut, while I much preferred the leaner Iberico char siew as the former was quite jelak, but it’s really up to personal preference. I found the glaze a tad sweet for my liking and was hoping for more caramelisation, though.
They also have a decent rendition of Crispy Roast Pork ($19.80++), AKA siew yoke, that you can order to share. Each piece had a good amount of crackling on top, with a generous layer of fat. It was well-executed, but rather pricey for the portion you get.
If you need some greens to offset the heavy meal, a serving of Poached Hong Kong Choy Sum ($9.80++) would do the trick.
Otherwise, the Braised To Fu ($5++) works as a clean protein that’s rather mild-tasting, great for pairing with rice or noodles.
Another signature item at Kam’s Roast is their Red Bean Soup with Orange Peel ($5.80++). I wasn’t a fan of the strong orange peel flavour, but after a few spoonfuls, I got used to the pairing.
The casual restaurant has a fair number of seats for fuss-free dining, though it can get a little squeezy during peak meal times. I’d recommend visiting when it’s less crowded for a more comfortable experience.
Kam’s Roast is located in Jewel Changi Airport, an eight-minute walk from Changi Airport MRT Station.
While you won’t find Kam’s Roast’s famous roast goose here, there’s still a great range of roast meats to choose from, plus sides and carbs for a complete feast. What’s more, the restaurant is located in Jewel, so it makes for a convenient meal before or after a flight!
Another restaurant worth checking out at Jewel is Elfuego, which offers Singapore’s first halal omakase. Otherwise, visit Sourbombe Bakery at Jewel for doughnut ice cream, savour croissants and more!
