Orchard Road is setting itself up to be a food trend haven, what with Shake Shack and Joy Luck Teahouse opening outlets in the district. Also entering the fray is Leckerbaer, a famous Danish patisserie, which now has a 36-seater cafe in Isetan Scotts.

If you’ve never heard of Leckerbaer (pronounced “leck-er-bah-yer”), you’re not alone. While extremely famous in Copenhagen, this is their first-ever overseas outlet. Founded by Scandinavian pastry chefs Gabi and Jackob Baer Mogenson, this cafe is all about introducing modern takes on Danish pastries to the world. Every sweet treat that lines the store is as eye-catching as can be, but their småkager (pronounced “smaw-kay-er”) is the star.

SmĂĄkager is another name for the Danish butter cookies everyone knows and loves. Instead of coming in their customary round blue tins and an assortment of shapes, Leckerbaer reinvents the cookie to focus on flavours. From Vanilla to Banana, Caramel, and Milk, these reinvented cookies come dressed with meringues, sandwiched with jams, or dolloped with spots of cream. Seasonal smĂĄkagers are also available, and these tend to focus on Nordic ingredients rarely seen here. Each cookie is priced at $2.80, and available also in boxes of eight ($22), 12 ($32), or 16 ($40).

Other highlights include their tarts, in particular, the Lemon & Sea Buckthorn ($7), which marries citrusy brightness with dense, buttery pastry to win over fans of lemon meringue pie. No sweet tooth? No problem, as the cafe has a small array of savoury tarts too, including its lush Quiche Tart ($13), made with gruyere cheese, mushrooms and truffles.
The next time you’re in Orchard Road with a sweet tooth that needs a fix, head down to Leckerbaer and satisfy it with desserts you’ve never tried before.
