As a food writer, coming across hidden gems with little social media presence gives me a sense of thrill—I simply can’t wait to share them with like-minded foodies like you. One of my recent discoveries is Lian Hup Heng, a humble hawker bakery at Amoy Street Food Centre.
My colleague and I could easily find the second-floor stall thanks to the vibrant signboard in an eye-catching shade of red. You can expect trendy bakes here, with the likes of tarts, brownies, and financiers.
We dropped by slightly after 1pm on a weekday and were surprised to see that some of the bakes were already sold out by then. It was a pity I couldn’t try their Almond Financier ($2.20), but this makes for the perfect excuse to visit them again the next time I’m in the CBD.
Since Lian Hup Heng serves their items only in takeaway bags and boxes, we decided to dabao them back to the office for our colleagues to try.
A collective favourite was the Orh Nee Tart ($3.80), where you get a crispy shell filled with creamy orh nee filling, and topped with two ginkgo nuts.
This was incredibly delicious—the orh nee filling was rich and smooth, tasting almost like sweet potato paste. Pair the mildly sweet filling with the ginkgo nuts, and you get a good balance of bittersweet flavours! I also appreciated that the shell wasn’t overly crumbly so it didn’t create a lot of mess.Â
The runner-up on this list is their Fudgy Brownie ($3.80), a classic that’s hard to mess up but also hard to master. This wasn’t the fudgiest of brownies, but I liked that it wasn’t too dense or chewy.
Moving on, I liked how clean-tasting their Yoghurt Cranberry ($3.80) was. I commented jokingly that this was somewhat like soft and moist banana bread but without the bananas—if you know, you know. Also, the addition of yoghurt gave the bread an airy texture and slight tang!
The Lemon Meringue Tart ($3.80) was a mixed bag. The lemon filling was a little too sour for my liking—a better blend of citrusy flavours and sweetness would have made this treat more enjoyable.
The bakery also has a Today’s Special ($3.80) that changes every day, so check it while you’re there!Â
