This Vegan Bubble Tea Cafe In Toa Payoh Has Oat Milk Boba, Truffle Pizza And More

While many bubble tea franchises now include vegan options on their menu, few take veganism as seriously as Mong Cha Cha Cafe. Located in Toa Payoh Central, this BBT cafe is wholly committed to serving up fare that’s both guilt-free and proper delicious.

The cafe itself is small but hip, with cosy interiors and warm spotlights that create a laid-back atmosphere. If you’re wondering why Mong Cha Cha has a polar bear mascot, the owner says it’s to remind us of the importance of sustainability, especially when considering the perilous situation our furry friends find themselves in due to climate change.

If you’re hesitant about the idea of vegan bubble tea, then we suggest you try the Earl Grey Black Sugar Boba Tea ($5.90) for a start. Here, the earl grey tea’s floral aroma shone through, the black sugar had a nice caramel flavour, and the soy milk did an admirable job of filling in for its dairy counterpart.

Another drink to check out is the Chocolate Oat Mylk Boba ($5.90), which, despite the use of oat milk, is as creamy and dense as it gets. Its chocolate flavour was plenty rich, and we thought the chewy pearls went along excellently with it.

The previous two drinks are part of the signature drinks menu, but you can also customise your bubble tea at Mong Cha Cha. Choose between Oolong, Earl Grey, Mugicha, or Golden Flower for your tea, then select your preferred milk alternative. Finally, complete your drink with the topping of your choice—there are brown sugar pearls, lychee pops, and pineapple nata de coco, to name a few.

As for food options, the curiously-named Monkey King Truffle Pizza ($16.90) is a decent shout. With its crispy pizza crust and prominent earthy notes, courtesy of its soy cashew truffle sauce, we enjoyed it as a savoury companion to our sweet drinks.

The Okonomiyaki Waffle ($11.90), however, is an even better dish. Packed with umami, this organic waffle is filled with fresh crunchy veggies and topped with handmade okonomiyaki sauce. Japanese vegan mayo and seaweed powder rounded out this delectable treat.
