8 New Restaurants In January 2021—Croissant Waffles, Japanese-Style Bak Chor Mee And More

New Restaurants this January 2021

While many people believe in the saying, “new year, new me”, I prefer to focus my energies on finding new restaurants to dine at as part of my New Year’s resolutions.

From a Yanxi Palace-themed hotpot restaurant to a Korean street food cafe with corn dogs and croissant waffles, here are 8 new restaurants in Singapore this January 2021 to check out if you’re a like-minded foodie.

1. Yanxi Palace Steamboat

Whether you’re a fan of the period Chinese drama, Yanxi Palace or not, you’ll still be able to appreciate the mouth-watering hotpot spread at Yanxi Palace Steamboat. The themed restaurant has over 100 items on the menu, including housemade broths in flavours such as Buddha Jumps Over The Wall (from $10.50). Presentation is important here too, so ingredients like Rose Beef Tongue ($18), Seafood Lollipops ($12), and Rose Tofu ($8) all taste as good as they look.

Other goodies include XL Bubble Tea ($5) in flavours like Da Hong Pao, Earl Grey, and Matcha to quench your thirst.

The restaurant is located at Hotel Re!’s Grand Ballroom, outfitted with carpeted floors, velvet chairs, and high ceilings. Don’t expect there to be decor that hardcore nods to Yanxi Palace, though, as this restaurant prefers to keep its references very subtle.

Address: 175A Chin Swee Road, Singapore 169879
Opening hours: Sun-Thurs 12pm to 12:30am, Fri-Sat, PH Eve and PH 12pm to 2am

2. Bunsik

Korean street food, especially corndogs, have been getting trendier lately thanks to hit dramas like Start-Up. Get your hands on those, in flavours like Mozza ($5) and Cereal ($5), as well as unique bites like Injeolmi Croffles ($5.50) at Bunsik. Also on the menu is Ddeokbokki ($9.90), a bowl of rice and fish cakes served in a spicy sauce. You get to pick your own spice level too, from one to three.

The new cafe in Ang Mo Kio is run by the folks behind Pluseighttwo cafe, a Korean dessert place in Bugis, though with cosier decor and a smaller menu. Located in Jubilee Square, the cafe is a 10-minute walk from Ang Mo Kio MRT Station.

3. Kream & Kensho

Outram Park continues to be a hot spot for IG-worthy cafes, what with Dolc Patisserie, Baker’s Bench, and now Kream & Kensho in the area. They specialise in Japanese-inspired cafe fare, with a rotating list of daily specials on the menu, including a K&K “BCM” ($15), a spin on bak chor mee, as well as Sakura Ebi Capellini ($18), topped with pearls of ikura.

Located just seven minutes from Outram MRT Station by foot, this cosy cafe is a great place to unwind if you’re in the area, complete with minimalistic decor and wooden chairs.

4. Peppermint Restaurant

Those looking to book a value-for-money buffet for a special occasion can look to Peppermint, a new buffet restaurant at PARKROYAL COLLECTION Marina Bay. Their lunchtime buffet is priced at $65++. The price may seem steep at first, but what you get for the price is hard to beat. Fresh seafood on ice, Nyonya kueh, delectable laksa, and vongole aglio olio are just some of the items you can look out for.

Peppermint’s decor will also make you reach for your phone to take photos, as the garden-themed main area of the restaurant sports towering greens that will transport you out of Singapore.

5. For The People

A good cafe is equal parts IG-worthy, and a place with good food, as well as coffee. For The People hits that criteria with its showroom-style decor, and fare that its founder terms as “easy-to-eat”. Look out for dishes like Churro Waffles ($14+) and Mozzarella Sticks With Sriracha Salsa ($8) if you’re feeling like light bites, or order their Fried Chicken & Waffles ($19+) if you prefer a more substantial meal.

For The People prides itself on being a comfortable space for people to just come and chill out, with cosy nooks and couches to sit at. The cafe also has power plugs you can use if you would also like to get some work done remotely.

6. Overrice

If you’ve ever gone to New York, you’d know just how popular The Halal Guys are. The food truck specialises in rice bowls topped with chicken, gyro meats (meat grilled on a vertical spit), and falafels. Singapore now has their very own version of The Halal Guys known as Overrice, a new eatery at Arab Street making a name for themselves with a similar menu.

Most of their menu comes in under $10, with the exception of the Pulled Beef Rice Bowl ($10.90). Try their Falafel Pita Pocket ($6.90), served with robust chickpea falafels and fresh greens in pillowy pita bread.

8. Little Caesars Pizza Singpost Centre

Little Caesars Pizza is a famed US pizza chain known for their value-for-money pizzas. In Singapore, they have the same beloved pies available from $7.99 when you dine at their outlets, including their recently opened store at Singpost Centre. Choose between flavours like Pepperoni ($7.99), or speciality options such as the Hula Hawaiian ($13.49) or 3 Meat Treat ($13.49). One thing to note is that the dough is made fresh daily, rather than frozen or pre-made.

The new Singpost Centre store is an easy place if you’re looking for a quick meal. Ample seating is available, and they also prepare their popular pizzas in advance during peak hours so you don’t have to wait too long for your order.
