This New Japanese Stall At Hong Lim Has Wagyu Omurice And Mains From $3.90

Omuplace has Japanese omurice in Chinatown

Omuplace might be new to Hong Lim Market & Food Centre, but the concept behind it isn’t. It’s the hawker spin-off of 2 Chefs Too Many, an unassuming Japanese restaurant tucked away in Changi Village. With its new CBD outpost, more diners can now get a taste of their food without making the trek to the east!

There wasn’t a long queue at the stall when we visited on a Wednesday afternoon, though we did spot a steady stream of customers, along with curious glances from office workers grabbing lunch nearby, likely drawn in by the new signage.

The menu covers a fair bit of ground for a hawker stall. Sub-$5 dishes include Miso Udon (from $3.90) and Pork Katsu (from $4.90), alongside pricier options such as Chicken Katsu Omu Rice ($8.90) and Pork Katsu Omu Rice ($9.90).

For mains, we ordered the Cold Truffle Goma Udon (from $5.90) and Wagyu Hamburg Omu Rice ($11.90).

The Cold Truffle Goma Udon is an interesting dish that I’ve yet to see at a hawker centre. Plated in a long oval dish, the noodles came topped with a runny soft-cooked egg, which we broke and mixed through for extra creaminess. The noodles themselves were thick with a slight chew, and the sauce—which coated every strand generously—carried a mild hint of truffle, though the sesame flavour came through more prominently.

Sliced carrots and broccoli rounded out the bowl, though the carrots weren’t cooked all the way through—a small miss in an otherwise solid dish.

Next was the Wagyu Hamburg Omu Rice, which was one of the priciest items on the menu, just a dollar short of the Cheesy Wagyu Hamburg Omu Rice ($12.90). The former arrived looking the part, featuring an oblong mound of rice and omelette generously drizzled with glossy brown sauce, crowned with the beef patty.

The patty itself was tender, breaking apart easily without turning mushy, while the omelette wasn’t quite as fluffy as we expected—it was firmer than usual, but still delicious. The sauce drizzled over everything was slightly sweeter than your typical Japanese brown sauce, and noticeably lacked any peppery kick, giving the dish a gentler, more rounded flavour overall.

We also ordered a Set Meal ($4), which came with a bowl of miso soup and a choice of one side: Ebi Fry or Tori Karaage. We went with the Ebi Fry, served alongside a compact bowl of miso soup.

Instead of a dip on the side, the prawn was drizzled with a tangy tonkatsu sauce. The batter was thin and crisp without a hint of oiliness, and revealed a springy texture and naturally sweet flavour within.

The miso soup, meanwhile, was fairly straightforward, loaded with radish, carrot and tau pok. It was comforting, though not particularly memorable.
