Once Upon A Time: Actress Jeanette Aw Opens Minimalist Bakery In Jalan Besar

Once Upon A Time bakery by Jeanette Aw

During the Circuit Breaker last year, the home baker boom was heightened when local celebrities like Jeanette Aw decided to join the fray. She launched her WTF (What The Fudge) Brownies, which had a waiting list that was almost 1,000 people strong at one point. Naturally, the reception paved the way for Jeanette to pursue her baking passion, and today, she will finally open the doors to Once Upon A Time, her flagship bakery in Jalan Besar.

The ultra-minimalistic bakery looks nothing like any cake shop we’d expect, decked out in white and light wood, with a marble island as a display counter. This is where you’ll get to see the bakes on offer, which Aw conceptualised and baked. If you don’t already know, the actress is minted by Le Cordon Bleu Dusit, an offshoot of the French culinary school in Thailand.

Currently, the public is not able to step into the bakery due to Phase 2: Heightened Alert measures, but you can get your hands on Aw’s bakes on the Once Upon A Time website, starting at 10am on 25 May. Orders can be for self-pickup, or delivery, which is priced at $18, according to 8days.

Daily, only three to five menu items will be available, but all of these are on rotation. For her launch, you can look forward to a selection of French-style cakes. These include Blueberry Burst ($10), a blueberry and lemon pound cake, Financiers ($26 for 10), which are french almond cakes, and Pineapple Financiers ($32 for 10), the former with a tropical twist. All elements are painstakingly made from scratch by Jeanette.

If the demand for Once Upon A Time’s bakes get too much, then get your hands on treats from other bakeries instead. If you need inspiration, check out our Haengbok Cakeyo review as we try fat macarons and chewy cookies from this new Korean bakery in Outram. We also have a guide to matcha cafes in Singapore, for all matcha-inspired desserts, which are available for takeaway.
