New Kiosk In Bugis With “Monster Claw” That Serves Matcha Via A Hole In The Wall

If you’re walking down Baghdad Street and spot a bright pink shophouse with what looks like a hole punched through the facade, you’ve found it. Peekabrew is Bugis’ newest and most theatrical drinks kiosk, seemingly taking inspiration from Jamboo Cafe in KL. Here, a monster lurks behind the pink wall and growls at you before handing you your drinks through a small, literal hole in the wall.

Here’s how to meet the monster: order at the self-ordering kiosk, wait for your queue number to be called, then ring the bell to let them know you’re there to collect. Then, get your camera ready as a clawed monster hand reaches through the hole in the pink wall to hand you your drink.

We ordered four items during our visit, spending a total of $32, which is quite pricey for a takeaway kiosk. 

The Strawberry Cloud Matcha ($9) was the most visually striking, featuring a matcha latte topped with pink strawberry foam.

The menu shows the foam dramatically overflowing down the sides of the cup—which was exactly what drew me to it—though in reality, it arrived neatly contained with a lid on. Understandable for a takeaway kiosk, but just a heads up if you’re ordering it for the ‘gram.

As pretty as it looked, the taste was unfortunately a mixed bag. The matcha had a slightly astringent aftertaste and reminded me of the pre-mixed kind you’d get from a beverage vending machine. The strawberry foam was also milkier than I’d liked. For $9, I expected a bit more depth.

The Buttercream Sea Salt Latte ($9) was more up our alley. Creamy and sweet, it reminded us of Luckin Coffee‘s Little Butter Latte. The sea salt was a tad faint—we would have liked more of it—but overall it was a pleasant drink.

Beyond drinks, Peekabrew does fried Japanese-inspired sandwiches from $7, in flavours such as Matcha, Whip Cream, Banana Chocolate and more. We had the Creme Brulee sando, featuring thick, generous whipped cream sandwiched between toast that was nicely caramelised on the outside. It did lean a touch oily, but as an affordable snack, it more than delivered.

My colleague preferred the Double Strawberry Sando, topped with tart sliced strawberries that cut through the sweetness of the whipped cream.

Do note that seating at Peekabrew is limited—there are only three camping chairs outside the shopfront, and once a queue forms, it can get a little hectic. When we visited on a weekday, there was already a long line, with people crowding around trying to catch a photo of the “monster”.

If you want a bit more breathing room, head around the corner into the small lane beside the shop, where there are a few more seats. They’re also unshaded, but you do get a bit more privacy away from the crowd.
