You may have noticed that recently, many stalls from Malaysia have set foot into Singapore! We’ve previously featured places such as Tampoi Ah B Wanton Noodles, Soon Huat JB Bak Kut Teh, Xin Shan Bakery and many others. I’m not complaining though, I’m happy that we don’t have to travel across the border to savour all the delicious food from Malaysia. Yet another recent addition, which just opened last month, is Pontian MeiGui BBQ, a famous eatery from Johor Bahru (JB) known for their freshly grilled seafood.

Established in 1982, Pontian MeiGui BBQ has been serving their famous grilled fish for over three decades! This family business is managed by five siblings, who inherited the stall from their father. They started off as a roadside stall and have since expanded to operate two outlets in JB. Their Geylang outlet marks their first step into Singapore, and they are rapidly gaining popularity, with many returning customers. You can easily find their stall just a five-minute walk away from Aljunied MRT Station.

Ordering here is straightforward: select your choice of fish, shellfish, or grilled veggies, then specify your preferred portion size, and how’d like it flavoured━with butter, sambal, or boiled.

When it comes to grilled seafood, a must-try is their Sambal Stingray ($5 per 100g), which stars huge slabs of tender stingray generously coated with their house-made sambal. Their sambal is known to have quite a kick without being overly spicy. Be sure to dip your stingray into the cincalok, AKA fermented shrimp sauce, that’s made in-house too. It not only helps to cut through the richness of the fish but also enhances the flavour of the stingray. For a more complete meal, pair your sambal stingray with a bowl of White Rice, priced at $0.50.

If you prefer other varieties of grilled fish, there’s a wide selection of 15 types on the menu, including Tongue Fish ($5 per 100g), Halibut ($5 per 100g), Chinese Pomfret ($5.50 per 100g), Red Snapper ($5 per 100g) and more.

Another highly recommended item is their Sambal Sotong ($10), which features succulent sotong, stir-fried with sambal and lady’s finger. Alternatively, you can consider their Sambal Sotong Petai ($13), which comes with lady’s finger and petai beans that have a nutty and earthy flavour.

From the shellfish section, definitely go for their Lala Clams ($8 per 350g), Siput Gong Gong ($8 per 350g), or Prawn ($5 per 100g).

Add a touch of green to your meal with their range of veggies; there’s Winged Bean ($6), Petai ($8), and Trumpet Mushroom ($6) you can order.
