Puzzle Coffee: Popular Melbourne Roaster Now Open At ION Orchard

Melbourne’s Puzzle Coffee in ION Orchard

With the opening of the Thomson-East Coast Line, or TEL, Orchard Road has suddenly become even more accessible. Get off at Orchard MRT Station, which leads right into Basement One of ION Orchard, to find Puzzle Coffee, a Melbournian import that’s just opened for business!

Located at Exit 9 from the TEL, you’ll find Puzzle Coffee to your immediate right once you step into the mall. You’ll first be greeted by the coffee counter, with a glass display for pastries and the like.

There’s a small area with stools and tables for dine-in customers too, done up in the trendy clean, pale wooden aesthetic we’re seeing in all the new cafes.

Puzzle Coffee is a popular Melbourne coffee spot that has four outlets to its name, with ION Orchard being their fifth, and first international location. They pride themselves on sourcing only the best, fairly traded specialty coffee beans from around the world and roasting them in-house. Here, their coffee is roasted weekly and delivered fresh directly from Melbourne!

As part of their social initiatives, Puzzle Coffee is known for serving their hot drinks in edible biscuit cups ($3 top-up) made of oats and grains. Not only does this reduce the amount of waste going into landfills, but the cups also make for a great accompaniment to your drinks, such as Magic—Melbourne’s Secret ($6)! A five-ounce style of coffee that’s a Melbournian special, it’s basically a double ristretto topped with steamed milk: AKA more concentrated than your usual flat white.

Besides the standard black and white coffees, cold brews, and even pour-over coffees, non-coffee drinks here include Matcha Latte (from $6.50), Hojicha Latte (from $6.50), Chai Latte (from $6). For the best of both, the Dirty Matcha (from $7) is one of their signature drinks, starring both matcha and coffee!

One of their bestselling drinks in Melbourne is Biscoff Latte (from $6.50), that’s available here too. This non-caffeinated drink is topped with a house-made cold foam for extra richness.

Their other bestseller is Black Sesame Latte (from $6.50), an earthy, goma-based drink.

The pastries that you’ll see in the display case are produced by Bakery Artisan Original, also known as BAO, which was co-founded by Gwen Lim, who’s the executive chef at Patisserie G.

We tried the Kaya Croissant ($5), sprinkled with dessicated coconut for added tropical flavour.

If you’re looking for something different from your usual kaya toast, consider this sweet-savoury pastry that’s lightly toasted to serve.
