Our team loves hawker bakeries for their cheap, fresh bakes that range from traditional buns to trendy tarts. Recently, we came cross Rotitiam at Upper Boon Keng Food Centre near our office, where everything is priced under $3. The bakery specialises in bread, but you can also find egg tarts, muffins and more here.

There’s the classic Char Siew Bun ($1.50), a sweet-savoury treat that comes packed with smoky Chinese BBQ meat. The most expensive bun is their crowd-favourite Parmesan Ham & Cheese ($3), featuring a thin slice of ham and a thick layer of melted cheese within.

We can’t forget the Portuguese Egg Tart ($1.50), a steady seller that’s a popular pick at the stall. Portuguese egg tarts are typified by their flaky pastry crust, but the Rotitiam’s version features a slightly firmer tart shell with a cookie-like crisp, finished with a creamy custard filling.

The Sourdough Cheese ($1.80) is another popular bun flavour, boasting an airy and chewy texture on the outside, with a salty and savoury cheese middle.

Rotitiam uses Japanese flour in their bread, resulting in a crumb that’s said to be softer and fluffier than usual.

You’ll also be greeted with a display of muffins in different flavours too. Please check with the stall owner for the exact prices and flavours.

Rotitiam is a bus ride away from Boon Keng MRT Station, and the bakery is open from 6am every day except Sunday and Monday.
