Min jiang kueh (MJK): a fluffy pancake packed with sweet fillings, typically sweet red bean paste, chunky peanut bits, creamy black sesame, or freshly grated coconut. I’m a huge fan of this traditional treat and have had my fair share from different stalls all over Singapore, but I’ve never come across Sarah’s Pancake until recently, when I was on the hunt for good food in the West.

There are three pancake batter flavours with five different fillings here—Original, Charcoal, and Matcha in the former category, and Peanut, Red Bean, Coconut, Sesame, and Kaya in the latter. Looking at their menu, I was reminded of popular MJK brands Munchi Pancakes and Ah Lock & Co.

Fans love their Sesame ($2.50) filling, which you can get in either Original or Charcoal pancake. It’s best eaten warm so the rich, grainy black sesame paste melts slightly, giving you a creamy and smooth mouthfeel.

Priced at $1.60, the Peanut is the most affordable option, available in all three batter flavours. Some online reviews tout the spread as having chunky and crunchy peanut bits, adding more textural variety to the otherwise soft and chewy pancake.

If you’re all about that tropical taste, the Coconut ($1.80), available in Original and Charcoal, is a great choice; it’s hard to go wrong with the sweet and nutty flavour of the shredded coconut paired with the light yet chewy pancake.

FYI, Sarah’s Pancake is a quick five-minute walk from Clementi MRT Station.
