Sushi Muni has omakase from $68++ in Tanjong Pagar

A good bowl of bak chor mee or prawn noodles is enough to make me content on most days, but when the opportunity to indulge in an omakase meal presents itself, I’m down in a heartbeat. If you also enjoy this intimate dining experience, here’s a new Japanese restaurant in Tanjong Pagar to check out: Sushi Muni.

The restaurant is tucked away in the corner of International Plaza on the second floor, its entrance sporting a minimalist look with wooden accents.

When you enter the restaurant, you’ll be greeted by a cosy space that can seat 10 diners at most.

Their menu is divided into lunch and dinner, with three options in the former and two in the latter. The cheapest of the lot is their Lunch Sushi Course ($68++), whereas the Sushi Omakase during dinner is the most expensive at $238++. 

We visited past 6pm and tried their Omakase ($168++) menu, which comprises an amuse bouche, two seasonal appetisers, followed by three different types of sashimi, Wagyu suki-shabu, uni somen, five types of sushi, a house roll, and a soup. Finally, you get a dessert to end your experience on a sweet note.

We started our meal with the sweet-savoury Amuse Bouche, featuring an airy and crispy meringue topped with marinated shiromi, AKA raw white fish, and caviar.

FYI, the chefs at Sushi Muni use a traditional technique called Edomae, better known as wet-ageing, to elevate the texture and flavour of raw fish. 

This typically involves marinating the fish in salt, soy sauce, or kelp for over two weeks to ensure it stays fresh and tasty. 

Aside from the delicious sashimi and sushi, the Wagyu Suki-Shabu was another highlight during our visit.

You get sweet soy sauce broth with a soft-boiled egg, tender Wagyu slices cooked for a few seconds, and bits of rice crisps for some textural variety.

Their House Roll was also interesting, starring vibrant ingredients such as cured egg yolk, rice crisps, and fresh raw fish. 

If you’d like to balance the heavy flavours within, we recommend having the Hand Roll with some house-made wasabi.

The refreshing dessert was the perfect finale for our filling meal. Made using seasonal fruits such as apples, strawberries, and Shine Muscat, the dessert is best eaten when mixed with the icy wine jelly that comes atop.
