Located at Wisma Atria in Orchard is a conspicuous and vibrant gelato store called Swirl Go. True to its omakase-themed concept, you can expect to be surprised here with gelato flavours that are beyond anyone’s imagination. This store is best suited for the adventurous who are down to explore wacky gelato combinations, but not to worry even if you don’t fall under that category, as there are familiar flavours that are less daunting too.Â
According to Chivas, the mastermind behind the unique gelato flavours, their Lao Gan Ma ($6.90) is one of the most popular flavours among patrons.Â
The vanilla gelato base is swirled with savoury lao gan ma chilli crisp, brown sugar syrup, and chocolate sauce in a machine. It’s then topped with mala potato chips and spicy rice crackers that are beautifully fanned out.Â
Similar to ordering mala xiang guo, you get to choose the spice level that ranges from xiao la (least spicy) to te la (most spicy). With the sweetness kicking in at first, then gradually replaced by the tingly spice from the chilli, the combination of vanilla and lao gan ma was indeed mind-boggling. To our surprise, the crispy little bits of lao gan ma played a huge role in elevating the overall texture of the gelato, contrasting well with the creamy dessert.Â
Their Burrata Parmesan Pomodoro ($7.90) took the test even further. The cream cheese gelato base is mixed with sundried tomato, dried basil, olive oil, and balsamic vinegar, with grated parmesan cheese as the finishing touch to the gelato. Think cold pizza toast with a discernible taste of olive oil lingering for a while.Â
If you prefer something more regular, Passionfruit Tart ($7.90) is the perfect gelato to cleanse your palate. The vanilla gelato base is mixed with half a passionfruit tart and a scoop of lemon curd. It’s then served with a drizzle of berry sauce, which turned out to be the icing on the cake. The refreshing taste was apt for the searing afternoon heat, as it struck a good balance of sweet and sour.Â
If their signature items don’t entice you, you can opt to DIY and create your own gelato. Choose between the Single ($6.90) and Combo ($8.90) options—you get one mix-in ingredient and one topping for the former, and two mix-in ingredients and two toppings for the latter.Â
Out of the plethora of mix-in ingredients and topping choices, we went with Nyonya Kueh and Toasted Coconut to complement our Black Sesame Gelato base. Do note that there’s an additional charge of $1 if you opt for the cone!
