The Kuihmaker: Under-HDB Bakery Sells Traditional Kueh From $0.60

The Kuihmaker in Bukit Batok

Adding to the list of kueh stalls in Singapore is the brand-new The Kuihmaker, a Muslim-owned bakery that just opened in the Bukit Batok heartlands, specialising in handmade traditional Malay kueh.

The stall is run by former owners of a home business, Officially Ooh La La. This brick-and-mortar venture is their first, and their kueh have been selling out daily since, so pop by as soon as they open at 6:30am to ensure you get your share.

The takeaway stall is decked out in surprisingly modern decor, with mood lighting, concrete accents, and a glass display case of handmade kueh adding a splash of colour to the space.

Prices start at $0.60, and increase depending on the kueh. However, you can get discounts if you buy in bulk.

Try their popular Kuih Salat, where an aromatic pandan curd tops sweet glutinous rice cooked in coconut milk.

Another familiar favourite is the Lapis Nyonya—soft and chewy with rainbow layers.

Don’t miss out on their gula melaka-laced selection of kueh. There’s Koleh Koleh, for chewy squares of coconut kueh made with green bean flour and topped with a coconut crumb; there’s Putri Salat, for a gula melaka spin on kuih salat, and Kuih Kosui, steamed to treacly depths and topped with fresh grated coconut.

The Kuihmaker also has a selection of savoury items, namely a selection of puffs.

Get your hands on layered, crisp Tuna Puff and Curry Chicken Puff for a midday pick me up. They also make bread, though on rotation.
