This New Cafe In Joo Chiat Has Sparkling Cold Brew, Sourdough Doughnuts And More

The Olive Door opens in Joo Chiat

A collaborative effort between Narrative Coffee Stand and Pelle & Pepe, The Olive Door is a new cafe that sees the two homegrown brands share a small, cosy space on the corner of Joo Chiat Place and Everitt Road. Technically half coffee stand and half bakery, the former’s freshly brewed coffee and the latter’s all-natural bakes come together to complete The Olive Door’s cafe concept.

This physical location is a first for Pelle & Pepe—prior to The Olive Door’s opening, they mostly sold their bakes online and at various pop-ups. Narrative Coffee Stand, on the other hand, opened their first outlet at Bras Basah Complex in 2019, making The Olive Door their second location.

On Narrative Coffee Stand’s menu are outlet-exclusive refreshers, such as Matcha Lemonade ($8.50) and Ice Earl Grey With Moustache Foam ($7.50). They also have Sparkling Cold Brew With Moustache Foam ($8), a unique coffee-based refresher that comprises a delicately sweet, creamy foam atop a layer of carbonated cold brew.

Hardcore coffee enthusiasts can pick from a range of self-sourced coffee beans from Brazil, Ethiopia, Guatemala, and Kenya, as well as specify their preferred brewing method.

As someone who likes their coffee on the milkier and sweeter side, though, I recommend the Flat White (from $5.50) with either of their house-made Maple Cinnamon ($1) or Vanilla Bean ($1) syrups.

Once you’ve gotten your drink, you can step over to Pelle & Pepe and order some bakes to fill your stomach. Apart from their pastries, which contain butter, their bakes are largely made from plant-based, wholegrain ingredients, and are leavened with an all-natural starter, which gives them a subtle tangy note.

My colleague and I particularly enjoyed the Blueberry Cashew Donut ($7.50), which features a doughnut that’s lightly crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, along with a tart blueberry filling and a spread of cashew butter.

Another crowd favourite is the Ground Cardamom Bun ($6.50), a pleasantly chewy bread with a strong spicy flavour.

The bakery also serves up savouries, including the Corn Chowder Poptart ($7.50), a puff pastry stuffed with fresh corn, celery, and potatoes cooked in a house-made vegetable stock, and Brioche Feuilletee ($4), which stars hand-laminated pastry with Vegemite.

The cafe has clean, minimalist decor, with limited capacity. Diners can enjoy their drinks and bakes at the standing bar indoors, or head outside for seats.

The Olive Door is surrounded by a number of hip cafes and popular eateries: just a three-minute walk away, for instance, is Wooly’s Bagels, another beloved homegrown brand to check out. Alternatively, head to Ah Yee’s Soon Kueh for a more traditional snack!
