15 Thomson Plaza Food Places For Loaded Chirashi Don And Cheap Hotpot

Thomson Plaza food guide

When I was growing up, Thomson Plaza was a place for tuition classes and nothing more. It was almost like a forgotten mall, but fast forward to the present day, and this mall has come back to life—thanks to its newly renovated interior and extensive selection of food. From delicious chirashi don to collagen hotpot, here are the best Thomson Plaza food places to check out.

1. Omoté

Omoté is known for serving up fresh and affordable Japanese fare. If you are spoilt for choice, try their renowned chirashi don, which comes in over 10 different varieties. Go for their classic Omote Chirashi ($18.80++) for a simple but moreish meal. If not, feast on the Super Mount Chirashi ($38.80++) with your dining partner. This toothsome rice bowl comes with a mountain of assorted seafood so packed that it can feed more than two.

From our Omote review: “The sashimi tasted fresh with a good meat-to-fat ratio, and the ingredients given were generous—I thought it was a steal considering the price.”

Unit number: #03-24A
Opening hours: Wed-Sun 11:30am to 2pm, 5:300pm to 9pm
Tel: 9450 1020

2. Wonderful Bapsang

No shopping mall is complete without a good Korean or Japanese restaurant, and Thomson Plaza has a plethora of them. One is Wonderful Bapsang, where you can feast on authentic Korean food. Start with the popular Sundubu Jjigae ($16.80++), where you can choose from dumplings, seafood, or just kimchi. There’s also Korean fried chicken here, with the likes of Bburinkle ($25++), which is essentially a sweet-savoury cheese seasoning, and the sweet-spicy Yangnyeom ($25++).

From our Wonderful Bapsang review: “Taste-wise, the soup was briny and punchy with just the right amount of spice. The chilli pepper broth was so rich and robust that pairing every scoop of soup with rice was essential—it might get a tad jelak if you drink the soup on its own.”

Unit number: #01-112/113/114
Opening hours: Mon-Fri 11:30am to 3pm, 5:30pm to 10pm, Sat-Sun 11:30am to 10pm

3. Hokkaido-ya

Opened by Sushi Tei, Hokkaido-ya is a fast-casual and wallet-friendly restaurant. Although the menu is priced affordably, Hokkaido-ya ensures that the quality and quantity of each dish are not compromised.

The value set meals are the most value for money, including Pork Katsu Don Set ($12.90+), Yakiniku Don Set ($14.90+) and more. Every set meal comes with miso soup and salad on the side! If you’d like something to share with your dining companion(s), consider the Hokkaido Corn Cream Croquette ($3.90+) or Ebi Fry ($5.90+)

From our Hokkaido-Ya review: “The dish was torched before serving, giving each mouthful a fragrant char. The thick mentaiko sauce further brought out the freshness of each dice of sashimi, making it hard to put my spoon down.”

Unit number: #03-49
Opening hours: Tue-Sun 11:30am to 10pm, Mon 11:30am to 3pm

4. Nan Yang Dao

Whether Malaysian or Singaporean food reigns superior is a never-ending debate, but that hasn’t stopped well-loved Malaysian food chains from setting up shop here. One such is Nan Yang Dao, which offers classic Malaysian fare. We tried a variety of dishes, and our favourite was the Penang Fried Kway Teow ($7.50+). The rice noodles were savoury and exuded a strong wok hei, exactly how a good plate of char kway teow should. The Selayang Big Bowl Curry Noodle ($9.90+) was another hit among the team, featuring lemak and spicy curry along with plenty of ingredients: boiled egg, tau pok, long beans, fish balls, pork belly, and prawns.

From our Nan Yang Dao review: “I liked that the prawns had a good bite, along with the chewy, gravy-soaked fishballs, tau pok, and beancurd skin. The fried pork belly slices that I occasionally discovered had tender meat, with a gelatinous layer of fat, making the dish quite shiok.”

Unit number: #03-46
Opening hours: Mon 10:30am to 4:30pm, Tue-Fri 10:30am to 10pm, Sat-Sun 10am to 10pm

5. BISTRO BOX By Uncle Penyet

Opened by the same team behind popular ayam penyet chain Uncle Penyet, BISTRO BOX is slightly more upscale than their usual outlets at hawker centres. But don’t worry, you can still look forward to getting a plate of the same smashed fried chicken they are known for here, priced at $12.80. They also have an equally delicious fish version, the Dory Penyet ($12.80), and a prawn version, the Udang Penyet ($12.80). Otherwise, for something different, go for their all-day breakfast, which sees options such as Blue Pea Nasi Lemak with Chicken Wing ($8.80) and Mee Siam Goreng with Spicy Chicken Cutlet Set ($8.80)

Unit number: #01-07
Opening hours: Daily 8:30am to 9pm

Peach Garden is a family-friendly dining spot that serves up a slew of authentic Chinese dishes and dim sum. The restaurant often offers an affordable dim sum buffet that’s available for a limited time, so we recommend keeping your eyes peeled for that. Otherwise, consider the Fried Crispy Eggplant with Pork Floss ($16++) and Steamed Creamy Custard Bun ($12.80++ for three) as sharing dishes.

Unit number: #01-88
Opening hours: Mon-Fri 10:30am to 2:30pm, 3pm to 5pm, 5:30pm to 10pm, Sat-Sun 9:30am to 2:30pm, 3pm to 5pm, 5:30pm to 10pm

They have a rotating menu of pastas each day, whipped up in different shapes and flavoured naturally with veggies such as pumpkin and sweet potato. Their Pasta Of The Day is priced at $15.

Other than pasta, they also have Roasted Pork & Waldorf Salad ($12/$18) that’s great for sharing. This comes with a crispy and fatty roasted pork, said to contrast well with the salad that features chopped celery, apples, raisins, and nuts.
