When my colleague pitched 42 Pasta is the Answer, my interest was piqued. I love fresh pasta, and the ones served at this new Thomson Plaza restaurant look legit. What’s more, they’re highly rated on Google, with a perfect 5-star score across 58 reviews at the time of writing.
The no-frills, cosy eatery specialises in handmade pasta, which you’ll find on their menu, listed simply as Pasta of the Day ($15). There’s only one pasta item on the menu, which changes based on what the chef decides to make. This means you can look forward to trying a different dish each time you return!
The fresh pastas are made daily by a former National University of Singapore professor, who now heads the restaurant with his wife.
Online reviews tout the pasta to be springy and cooked to the perfect texture, without any doughy flavour. Past iterations include Tagliatelle al Ragu, where al dente noodles are tossed in meaty tomato sauce, and Sweet Potato Caramelle: candy-shaped pasta filled with creamy sweet potato, cooked with brown butter and balsamic vinegar.
If you’re not in the mood for pasta, order their Roasted Pork with Waldorf Salad ($12/$18), the only other main on the menu. The pork is said to be crispy on the outside with a juicy, tender middle, best paired with forkfuls of salad to cut through the richness.
For dessert, try their house-made Basque Cheesecake ($6); online reviews say this cake boasts a creamy and smooth texture that remains light on the palate.
Do note that this restaurant is a small-scale operation, so there might be some waiting time involved.
