If you frequent Jalan Besar, you may have seen a new addition to the neighbourhood. Average Service is the latest cafe to open in the area, offering more than just your regular brunch fare: think Bangkok-viral thick bacon egg toast, “handkerchief” sheet pasta and more!

The vibey spot is an eight-minute and 10-minute walk from Farrer Park and Bendeemer MRT Stations respectively. They’re also open till 12am on Fridays and Saturdays, so you can TGIF and hang out till late there.

We’ve got our eye on the Thick Slab Bacon ($26++), which looks strikingly similar to the OG Velvet Egg & Bacon dish by the famous Fran’s Cafe in Bangkok. Average Service’s version stars a 180g slab of maple-glazed bacon on top of creamy eggs and a slice of brioche sourdough. The thick-cut bacon is said to be juicy and flavourful, with just the right amount of fat cap.

If you’re not big on bacon, consider the Average Chilli Egg Toast ($20++), featuring the same eggs paired with feta cheese and house-made chilli oil instead.

Another signature item is the Mentai Handkerchief Pasta ($24++), comprising sheets of “handkerchief” pasta doused in a house-made mentaiko cream sauce, then finished with bacon chunks for extra richness.

If you’re craving a sweet treat, you won’t wrong with the Average Maple Toast ($16++), where thick honey toast is baked and torched till caramelise, then finished with house-made whipped cream and maple syrup. The toast is said to have a slight crunch with a fluffy middle.

Otherwise, end your meal on a sweet note with their cube-shaped cakes, served in flavours such as Strawberry Shortcube ($13++)–vanilla chiffon with strawberry compote within white chocolate mousse–and Hazelnut Valrhona Chocolate Cube ($13++): dark chocolate, chocolate mousse, hazelnut cream, chocolate chiffon, and feuilletine crunch.
