Vernacular Coffee: New Minimalist Cafe With BKK Vibes And Gula Melaka Ice Cream Sandwich

Vernacular Coffee has legit coffee and pastries in Mountbatten

If there’s one thing I don’t mind spending on, it would be a good cup of coffee paired with fresh bakes. So you can imagine my excitement when I chanced upon a new cafe to explore this weekend, by the name of Vernacular Coffee. This minimalist, spacious cafe is a quick five-minute walk from Mountbatten MRT Station. Here, they serve up house-made bakes with barista-brewed coffee from Indonesia, Thailand and more!

One of the best things about Vernacular Coffee is the roomy interior with a high ceiling. Some online reviews shared that the cosy yet chic ambience is reminiscent of trendy cafes in Australia and Bangkok!

They take coffee very seriously here, with coffee beans mainly sourced from different Southeast Asian countries. If you’d like to try a bit of everything, we recommend the Espresso Flight ($9.50+); you get a cup of espresso, as well as a cup of flat white topped with beautiful latte art. Else, there’s the Single Origin Chocolate (from $6+) made with cacao beans sourced from Malaysia and The Philippines.

I was pleasantly surprised to see Ice Cream Sandwich ($8+) on the menu as it’s a rare find in cafes. Plus, you get to choose from three different flavours: Salted Gula Melaka, Single Origin Chocolate, and Vanilla. Each sandwich comes with a crispy pastry neatly packed with a cold slab of ice cream of your choice.

If you prefer savoury to sweet flavours, their Breakfast Danish ($8+) does the trick. This flaky viennoiserie comes loaded with Scrambled Eggs or Avocado, in a portion that’s good for one or two.

Danish fans can also try their sweet-savoury Fruit Danish in four variations: Blueberry and Vanilla Chantilly ($8+), Mae Suai Tomato and Pesto ($8+), White Grape and Brie Cheese ($10+), and Medjool Date and Goat Cheese ($10+).
