Must-tries at the virtual Singapore Food Festival 2020


Singapore Food Festival has been celebrating the nation’s unique food culture for as long as I can remember. Even amidst the global pandemic, they are going strong by rolling the event online from 21 to 23 and 28 to 30 August this year. 

This virtual version features live masterclasses, food tours and more. And just like the past events, foodies can still enjoy the culinary gems that are brought to the fore every year. You can now select from a list of islandwide-delivered food and kits on SingaporeFoodFestival.sg and Shopee to be delivered to your doorstep.

Here is an inkling of the food virtual Singapore Food Festival 2020 has to offer:


1. Kaya Cream Choux by Odette

Staying at home doesn’t mean your Instagram feed has to suffer. Up your home cafe vibes with fancy desserts from Odette. This three-Michelin star French restaurant will be offering a LE P.B.S ‘Paris-Singapour’ ($48) box filled with two Paris-Brest pastries. 

Local flavours such as kaya and gula Melaka are highlighted in Chef Julien Royer’s rendition of the classic Paris-Brest. Combined with the textural contrast of the crunchy sugared-crust and luscious praline cream, these pastries are worth every bite and buck.

2. Milo Dinosaur Doughnut by Burnt Ends Bakery

Michelin-starred chef Dave Pynt not only has the successful Burnt Ends restaurant and hawker stall Meatsmith under his belt, but also the popular Burnt Ends Bakery. The bakery is known for its stuffed doughnuts with flavours ranging from tart Passionfruit Curd ($24 for six pieces) to rich Vanilla Cream ($24 for six pieces)

An event-exclusive flavour is their Milo Dinosaur ($24 for six pieces) doughnuts, which incorporates Singapore’s all-time favourite malt chocolate drink into the fluffy brioche dough to hit the sweet spot. Take note this is only available from 21 August!

3. Chicken Rice Pretz by Glico

In collaboration with Wee Nam Kee Chicken Rice, Pretz by Glico did the right thing to incorporate one of Singapore’s emblematic hawker dishes into their new biscuit stick flavour—Hainanese Chicken Rice. Imagine bites of savoury and salty flavours, tempered with the buttery crunch of baked biscuits. Finishing a packet of this new pretzel stick in a sitting would be an easy feat.

Here’s a good idea: stock up on these limited-edition Pretz and mail it to friends and family who are stuck overseas to serve them a little dose of Singapore! You can find this flavour at FairPrice supermarkets, Don Don Donki outlets, Redmart, Cheers and more.


4. Passion Gao Siew Dai by Brewerkz

A passionate day at work calls for a passionate wind down with a beer at night. At $57 for a pack of six, Passion Gao Siew Dai is the newest flavour by Brewerkz for craft beer enthusiasts to chill out with. Fruity notes of passionfruit and mango add a delicious summer sweetness to each sip of the citrusy hops.

5. Prawn Otah Cookie by Cedele

To honour the unique and beautiful flavours of Peranakan food, Cedele has conceived an interesting baked treat for Singapore Food Festival 2020—the Prawn Otah Cookie ($9.80 for 10 pieces). Almost symbolic to the rich medley of ethnic influences in Peranakan culture, the cookies are spiked with a hodgepodge of flavours from chilli, shallots, coconut milk, dried shrimp and more.

These cookies will be available from 21 August, and sold at 12 selected Cedele outlets including Great World City, Marina Bay Sands, Wheelock Place, Greenwich V, HillV2, Waterway Point, Parkway Parade, Raffles City, City Square Mall, Frankel Avenue, Jelita, and Novena Square.


6. Sambal Bajak and Sambal Goreng Chilli by Violet Oon

Besides having a wide variety of unique food, the Virtual Singapore Food Festival this year also offers over 15 masterclasses by the best chefs for you to upgrade your skills in the kitchen forever. On 22 August, Violet Oon, will be holding a live class to share tips and tricks of cooking with her Sambal Bajak ($19) and Sambal Goreng Chilli ($17) sauces.

7. Char Siew Smoked Ribs By Burnt Ends


Similarly, Michelin-starred chef Dave Pynt of Burnt Ends and head chef Eddie Goh of Meatsmith will be having a masterclass for smoking ribs on 29 August as well. Discover the kitchen with baby steps by purchasing their Char Siew Smoked Ribs DIY Kit ($88), which will be delivered to you, prior to the live teaching session. Recreate two racks of superbly tender and juicy ribs with the sweet-savoury glaze that comes with the kit, which will only be available till 24 August.
