Xiao Di Fried Prawn Noodle: Hidden Gem Hokkien Mee Stall In Serangoon With Shiok Wok Hei

Xiao Di Fried Prawn Noodle has famous hokkien mee in Serangoon

Ask any Singaporean for the best Hokkien mee stall, and chances are you’ll get mentions of big names such as Nam Sing, Geylang Lorong 29, Swee Guan, and Singapore Fried Hokkien Mee. We’re always one to root for underdogs too, which is why we’re here to cast the spotlight on Xiao Di Hokkien Mee.

Located in Serangoon, Xiao Di Hokkien Mee is founded by a young hawker with over a decade in the hawker trade. He was an apprentice at several notable Hokkien mee stalls before branching out on his own, and developing his own recipe.

A plate of his wet-style Hokkien Mee is priced at either $4.50 or $5.50 here. The stock is specially made with Thai prawn heads, which come packed with umami roe. This imparts a heady, salty-sweet shrimp flavour to the zhup.

Then, to intensify the flavour, a generous dose of garlic and pork lard is added. The Hokkien mee is also fried with slivers of pork belly, fresh prawn, cuttlefish, and ribbons of egg. Scallions and a squeeze of lime give the dish a bit of zing and bite.

Another reason to try Xiao Di Fried Prawn Noodle’s Hokkien mee is the house-made chilli, laced with belacan and lime juice for a fiery kick.

Queue times can be quite long, up to half an hour. To avoid having people stand in line, the stall offers buzzers so you can find a table and sit down with a drink as you wait.
