Westies, you might want to sit down for this: Bao Hao at Jurong West Street 25 offers a wide selection of dim sum, including handmade bao from under $1!
The stall is run by a bao master who has been practising his craft for 58 years and counting, alongside his nephew. Although the location might be remote for most, it has built up a following for serving cheap breakfasts to residents and university students nearby.Â
Their sweet bao selection goes for $0.90 each, and includes the likes of Pandan Bao, Bean Paste Bao, Coffee Bao, Lotus Bao, and Longevity Peach Bao.Â
Then there’s their savoury bao varieties, starting with the humble Char Siew Bao ($1), all the way to the humongous Big Bao ($2) that’s stuffed with pork and egg.Â
However, what stands out here is the Braised Pork Bao ($1.50)—a thick, fatty piece of braised pork belly folded within a fluffy bao. We’re told that this is one of their most popular items, and it’s easy to see why!
Bao Hao is no short of dim sum items too, most going for $2.50 or less. The quintessential duo of Siew Mai and Har Kao go for $2.30 each, and you can complement them with Prawn Tail Dumplings ($2.30), Seaweed Pork Rolls ($2.30), and Fan Choy ($2.30), among others.Â
A more unique offering is the Century Egg Dumpling ($2.30), which feature the black eggs wrapped in a siew mai dumpling shell. Those feeling particularly voracious can opt for the Sweet and Sour Pork Ribs ($2.50) or the Lotus Leaf Rice ($3.50) to fill their bellies.Â
Bao Hao is located within the coffeeshop Cafe 276, aptly named after the HDB block it is situated in. It is a 20-minute bus ride from Boon Lay MRT Station.
