When it comes to the best char siew spots in Singapore, 88 Hong Kong Roast Meat Specialist and Chef Kang’s Noodle House are often mentioned, but one brand that frequently flies under the radar is Char.

While its flagship outlet is at Race Course Road, CBD workers may remember its former takeaway-only kiosk, Char Express, at Raffles Place’s CIMB Plaza. It has since relocated to a stall at PLQ Mall’s Kopitiam, where diners can now enjoy their meals on-site.

Founded in 2014, Char earned the Michelin Plate from 2016 to 2018 and was featured in the Michelin Guide’s 2018-2019 selection of Fine Cantonese Food list. Its char siew has become so popular that fans are more than willing to travel across the island just to get a taste.

You’ll be able to spot its iconic tagline, “One Of A Kind Char Siew,” embossed on its black signboard. Even with the location change, you can still expect the same textures and flavours that define its quality char siew—a perfect balance of smoky and sweet notes, with beautifully caramelised pieces that melt in your mouth.

Besides their char siew, you must also try their crispy pork belly, which is marinated in a blend of herbs and spices and roasted over high heat, as well as their locally-sourced roast duck.

You can enjoy these roast meats in a variety of combinations, starting with the basic sets—Char Siew Rice, Roast Duck Rice, and Roast Pork Rice—each served with a bowl of soup for $6.50. If you prefer, you can swap the rice for noodles for just $0.20 more.

If you want the best of multiple worlds, opt for combinations such as Char Siew and Roast Pork Rice ($7.50), Char Siew and Roast Duck Noodles ($7.70), and Roast Pork and Roast Duck Noodles ($7.70).

For larger groups, Char offers their Signature Roast Platters, including Char Siew and Roast Duck ($11), Char Siew and Roast Pork ($11), Roast Duck and Roast Pork ($11), or the trio of Char Siew, Roast Duck, and Roast Pork ($15).

The next time you’re craving char siew but don’t wish to head to the central areas, swing by Char’s latest outlet near Paya Lebar MRT Station!

If you wish to benchmark Char’s offerings against other top competitors, consider Lai Fa Ba and their woodfire-roasted char siew, or Fook Kin’s famous char siew and siew yoke in Somerset.

Address: 10 Paya Lebar Rd, #04-11 R02 PLQ Mall Kopitiam, Singapore 409057
Opening hours: Daily 10am to 9pm
