If you enjoy nostalgic treats such as orh nee tarts, banana pies and kaya cakes, check out Breadwerks, an old school bakery that is home to a wide variety of traditional bread, tarts, cream cakes and many more.

Breadwerks first opened its doors in 2015 along River Valley Road, and expanded to more outlets around Singapore as their business grew. Since then, they have relocated their main store to Joo Chiat Road, and just launched their newest location at Our Tampines Hub.

Breadwerks’ selection of cream tarts are definitely a must-try if you are looking for a classic treat. Priced at $1.40 per piece, these cream tarts make an excellent afternoon tea snack. If you are looking for something rich and fancy, try the Salted Caramel with Pistachio or with Nutella. Otherwise, go for local flavours such as Gula Melaka, or even Horlicks! If you have a hard time choosing the flavours, opt for the assorted box of six ($7.60) or 24 ($31.60) so you can get a taste of everything.

Besides these cream tarts, you can also find the adorable Cake Pops ($2.10) and Rainbow Pushpops ($3.60) in-store.

If the cream tarts or cake pops aren’t your cup of tea, consider the old-school block cakes. There are more than 10 flavours to choose from, and they’re all priced at $6.30 a box, excluding the D24 Durian cake ($8.90).

The Old School Vanilla Sponge, Strawberry Sponge, and Chocolate Sponge are classic, traditional flavours that will immediately evoke a nostalgic feeling as you take a bite into the cake. For something new, try the Cempedak, which is said to be one of Breadwerks’ all-time favourites.

While you’re there, don’t forget to check out Breadwerks’ variety of old school bread items. It includes everything from classic mini chicken sausage buns ($2.90 for five) to coconut buns ($2.20), and chocolate-sprinkled doughnuts ($9.90).

If you decide to visit the main store at Joo Chiat Road, we recommend heading down to Lim Bo Rojak next, for some delicious Penang-style rojak. It’s just a short, four-minute walk away! Alternatively, take a 13- to 15-minute walk back to PLQ or Paya Lebar Square where you can find affordable yakiniku, famous Taiwanese charcoal-grilled toast and more.
